Has anybody used a Liberty PS rack in an unlifted L series?

Im putting a Liberty power steering rack in my RX. I have the ends sorted, but the shaft needs some attention.
I shortened the extension shaft and it fits, but the angle is too sharp and when rotating the steering wheel, it is notchy.
So i need to shorten the bottom shaft (the one on the rack) but looking at the FSM, it looks very complicated to remove so that i could machine more splines further down. Working on it while its in the rack as heat may damage the seals in the valve part.
My other option was to modify the crossmember to rotate the rack backwards so the shaft is at a better angle. Dont really wanna do this though.
My 3rd thought, was to use lift blocks on just the engine crossmember. This would also be a bonus as it (if im right) will improve the suspension geometry.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
