can you run a wrx 5 speed box off a ea81, then a wrx rear diff with special cvs to wrx hubs ?? does that make sense ? haha

Why would you ? By the time you go to all the trouble it would be eaiser to put an EJ motor in it.

yes you can but it would cost more than an Impreza.

and youd have to ditch your chrome rims

You could build a gearbox, l series front casing with ej internals or use a adapter plate!
longer tailshaft, crossmsmber & linkage mods ect, would not be that hard.

Impreza hubs are not required unless you want them, if so use a crossbread kit.

Rear diff is simple enough.

your car will be less super cool because you can't do sik burnouts anymore.

Agreed. Do some research on the forum about it. L series casings can accommodate EJ gearbox internals and rear casings. The other mods wouldn't be too hard to achieve, as I've said, just do some research. Someone was selling MY (brumby) based gearbox crossmembers to fit the EJ gearbox to your brumby - this would make it easier to fit the this hybrid gearbox if you could get one - less mucking around on your part.

I'd use a liberty AWD gearbox - cheap as chips. Once you've got your EA81 driving your hybrid EA cased EJ AWD internals it would be plug and play when you move on to a WRX drive train. The only thing you'd have to do to bolt the engine and gearbox in is modify the engine crossmember for the turbo up-pipe unless you can buy and ship a turbo brat engine crossmember from the states, that's give it the factory look too. But again $$$.

I don't think it would be possible. At least not easily.
Most people use engine/gearbox adaptor plates the opposite way around - ie, to fit an EJ engine to an EA gearbox. I beleive it is possible to use them around the other way, but you will run into issues with getting a clutch/flywheel combination that will work. For instance, you will need to use the turbo "pull" clutch system to match the gearbox, which means you'd also need the matching flywheel, and I can't think how you'd get that to bolt onto an EA81.
An early Liberty awd gearbox might be better, it has a "push" type clutch which is actuated by a clutch cable. Still quite a bit of messing around to get that to work with an EA engine though.

I assume your objective is to get AWD.

It would be a lot easier to fit an EA based AWD gearbox but these are far too rare now. Even if one came up forsale, Guyph would buy it before you'd have a chance (pretty sure the guy has sticky pictures of them under his bed).

Basically it might be possible but you'd be pioneering because, well frankly nobody else has bothered with such a fruitless exercise.

Given the effort you'd have to go for, the point somebody else made immediately is certainly valid. Put your efforts into converting to an EJ engine at the same time.
That way the gearbox and engine just fit together already, and you can spend your efforts custom fitting the engine to the car - at least we know this works and has been done many times before.
It might cost you a bit more but at least it's not a waste.

Although it looks like the DCCD could be the way to go in the future I do like simple mechanical locking devices though.

I actually have one of these, that I bought of that bloke, it is excess to my requirements if anyone is interested in one.

Henpecked, I would love to if A) I could afford it and B) I could convince my mother inlaw to EJ turbo Sunnie the brumby - it'd be a total almost grandma sleeper Gail would love it too!
