Conversion advice

Hey guys

Just picked up an L-series touring wagon(EFI) with an ej22 from a gen1 liberty on the side, bad news is it's just the motor.

Looking to do the conversion as soon as possible, sticking with the EA box, so looking for advice on what parts i need and where to get them.

I figure ill need:
- ej22 headers
- ecu and loom (if anyone is keen to cut the loom down, in perth, let me know cause i have no clue with wiring)
- HD clutch
- adapter plate is all sorted and probably just knock up some engine mounts
Anything i'm missing?

G'day stewbaru - welcome to the forum!

No bad news about just being an engine - my conversion started with an EJ20 catalyst, I've not got a gen 1 EJ22 in Ruby Scoo. You'll love the transformation of your L series!

Anyway. On the EJ22 you should have some engine wiring still attached, hopefully it has some grey plugs on the passenger's side of the engine, there should be 2 or three plugs. You need to either get a wiring loom and computer from another liberty that has the same number of plugs and it must be from a Gen 1.

Or the better option would be to get all wiring, sensors and ECU from an EJ22'd liberty - engine sensors to ECU and all the wiring in between.

You can cut down the loom yourself if you've got some wiring knowledge and can read a wiring diagram. You just cut out anything that is not ECU or engine wiring. You'll end up with 4 wires needing power and a few more for gauges and other none essential things.

You could try running with a standard clutch - it could be the thing that saves your gearbox in the long run if you like to give it some stick. With the EJ extractors or Y pipe you'll also need the oxygen sensor...

You'll also have to upgrade your radiator OR watch your temperature gauge like a hawk at all times!

Thanks Bennie thats a big help and it does have that wiring left on it so all good there:). I've read quite a few threads about the conversion on here, a huge help, but just wanted to make sure i've got the complete picture.

Hi mate,

Welcome to the world of subaru:P Being an MPFI it will be much easier for you to convert and drop in the EJ22. You won't have to worry about the fuel return, EFI pump etc.

You will have to redrill the EA flywheel to suit the back of the EJ engine and you will need to sort out a better rad for the engine, do some research, its been covered plenty of times, but thats about it i think is missing from your list.

Dave is the man to speak when it comes to the wiering. Last time it was $400 cut and installed but its better to ask him. Also he is on a trip around Aus at the moment so you may have to wait untill he gets back.

HD clutch pm AndrewT. he will be able to tell you the name of a shop thats done most of our custom clutch used on our cars.

I may have some parts you need but i'm on holiday till FEB.

when i did mine, i thought i'd covered everything before i started the conversion but you'll definately find little things that you didn't think of.
* EA Flywheel with holes elongated to suit EJ pattern.
* Transfer the Gearbox mounting studs from the EA to the EJ (or aquire new longer ones)
* If you decide to go with a liberty radiator, search Suparoo's Radiator support modification to allow it to be mounted in the L series.
I'm sure theres a few other things but these were the ones that held me up in my conversion, best of luck mate! You'll definately enjoy the new motor in the L!!

Do you reckon it's worth going for the HD clutch?

just get a clutch to the same specs as a liberty manual.

auto clutch in osborne park did all my work and did a real good job. Even sumhow making a clutch to bolt up to ej20turbo with the ea82 gearbox. Was a pretty hectic clutch.

as a side note, the clutch disc off an ej22 liberty will fit onto the l-series box.

For my car i bought a Heavy duty clutch from clutch industries. I reget it. When i reverse my boat or on off-road tracks that i make the clutch slip a bit it smells a lot. The brumby however has a clutch from auto clutch and in similar situations doesn't smell.
That guy knows his job. Just give him the old EA pressure plate and disk and he will mod them to the EJ22 specs, it will be as good as new. don't forget to get a new trust bearing too. also get the flywheel machined:)

Hmmm seems the costs are mounting haha oh well have to work a bit harder and hopefully i can pick up the parts soon so i can it get underway.
