just a small write up on what ive learned from around the place about induction options for these engines.
Multiple port fuel injections
Standard fuel injection that can be found on EA82 motors, these can easily be adapted to the EA81 engines. Provides much better support while on angles when Offroading. Requires the use of duel port heads, best to use the MPFI engine as standard carburetted block is different and requires a new hole to mount.
Custom fuel injection
Can be built using modified standard intake manifold. Allows for any chosen computer ie motec or megasquirt, can be built using either the single port or duel port heads. Possible to build using Holden Camira injectors, computer and associates. For power custom multiple port injection is likely to be by far the best choice for power however it is easy for a system to go wrong and as such less power may result.
Standard single port fuel injection
Not sold in Australia, found on the EA82 motors can easily be changed to the EA81. Provides much better support while on angles when Offroading. Can be used with the single port heads and as such is an improvement over the standard carburettor. The single port injection can be sourced from America or other markets where these where sold. Basically acts as a single carburettor however is not effected by angles and float bowl levels.
Custom duel carburettors
Two separate carburettors sitting above each head or else on a manifold. Most commonly done with Volkswagen flat engines, can be built using single or dual port heads depending on the carburettors used such as single throat Stromberg or duel throat Webbers. Linkages can also be a problem but are usually easily fixed with a slight amount of ingenuity; largest problems with this set up are the tuning and cooling as the water jacket and thermostat housing are mounted with the standard intake manifold.
Standard duel carburettor
Available on special EA81 engines but can be modified to suit the EA82 engines. When available the cost is roughly 800$A (2010) these can more easily sourced from overseas however. Can be difficult to tune, if you can get your hands on it quite powerful when tuned properly.
Standard carburettor
Basic EA81/82 engine configuration. Least powerful but much more reliable than any other system can be difficult when used offroad due to angles and the float bowl.
Upgraded single carburettor
Many carburettor options exist to replace the standard item. The ford Cortina 2.2 unit is popular and at roughly 50$A (2010) for the carburettor unit and 25$(2010) for an adaptor plate this is a very good option. Tuning is difficult and carburettor may require modification to be better. Other options for a replacement carburettor may exist
TURBO*
The ultimate in EA81/82 engines. Can be tuned depending on use, fuel injected as above but with the added option boost pressure and delivery restrictor size. This will hopefully be written about in another section.
