Subaroosters EJ conversion Thread.

The time has come where i've mustered up enough motivation to tackle the conversion.

I've been collecting and fabricating parts for a fair while now and this morning i woke up and decided it needed to be done.
The EJ is out of an 01' Impreza and i'm running with a surge tank, vl pump and liberty radiator. Started pulling the old EA out this morning and an hour later it was out, on a pallet.

I'd like to have it running by tomorrow afternoon but if not I have a run around until next weekend when i can finish it. I'll post up a few photos later on today.

Engine out already, seems like it was only 30 minutes since you were on the phone telling you were about to start. Was Matt there helping you?

haha yeah it makes me appreciate how simple the EA really is.

Radiator support is now made, ignition switch and immobiliser is in, throttle cable mounted in firewall.

Could you take some pic and explain how you got the Liberty radiator to fit and how you modified the rad support? This is something that will be helpful to many:)

Good luck with the conversion. The new power plant is going to be so worth it:)

Yepp, i'm halfway through butchering the radiator support atm so i'll post up some pics tomorrow with the new mounts in place

don't loose motivation it is a tough job to do but the end result is well worth the frustration

haha well, after an afternoon of beer, cutting, welding and soldering it is looking pretty good so far.

Wiring is pretty much done, computer/key barrel and immobiliser are mounted up under the steering column. Radiator support is done but due to rushing circumstances, i'll let Suparoo post up photos of his instead of mine.. :P
Loom is mounted thru firewall, throttle cable and so on is all done. On Wednesday i'll be ready to drop the engine in and bolt it all in, then the only thing left to do it mount my surge tank/ pump etc.. The only thing that has inhabited my dreams for the last week is that first start of the EJ. haha anyway i'll post up photos soon, but i'd say if all goes well, it may be driveable by saturday.

Righto, quick update.. This arvo i got home from work and elongated the engine mount holes in the crossmember, finished up the wiring and started mounting the surge tank. Then i decided to drop the motor in while i had a bit of day light. So far its all been pretty good, i've included some photos from a few days ago till now. I'd say tomorrow arv i'll hav the engine completely bolted in.

That wiring certainly looks messy! Will you be wrapping it up in tape or some from of conduit?

Good stuff, looks likes you've done your research before taking on the task - or is this conversion #2<?

Yeahh got it in yesterday arvo, the old man was the 'holder of the block and tackle chain, due too non locking mechanism inside.' haha yeahh that wiring is all done now, that was just a photo of what i started with but now its taped in sections and all tied up nice and tidy.

This is my first EJ conversion and too be honest i'm loving doing it.. Been coming home from work (working on others cars all day) and have been motivated to work until sundown which is good.

i'll do a little more this arv and update you all tonight.

Hmmm... hit a snag. something i didn't think of. Had the engine mated to gearbox and went to bolt up and.... uhhh.. wheres the bolts? then i remembered ahhh theres studs on the engine. uhhhh... wheres the studs in the engine.

i've pulled out the ones from the EA but i don't think they'll be long enough because of the adapter plate. what has everyone else done?

Here's what we've done for Gleno's EJ22 conversion.. the bottom studs are the EJ and the top bolts are modified.

Thats pretty darn clever if you ask me RSR

, but the problem is now rectified, acquired some longer studs and bolted the engine and gearbox together, lowered it all onto the mounts and came inside feeling that i deserve a beer. Yesterday arv the old man gave me a hand to line up the box and motor.. can you imagine the sinking feeling when i realise i need to put studs in first. so this afternoon, working the solo shift.. i pulled it out, installed studs, dropped in, lined up, eased together and tightened before the sun went down.

sorry about the rant.. i'm feeling mighty accomplished at the moment. haha tomorrow i have the day off so i'm hoping to have it running by tomorrow arv.
