Hi all,
New to the forum and just getting back into the early subaru scene.
I am looking at doing up an EA81 motor with the following;
- installing a weber carb,
- EA71 pistons(increase compression ratio),
- post 85 heads ported(bigger valves),
- electronic distributer,
- and an after market camshaft???.

Has anyone completed this before and can recommend a camshaft to use. The engine is being installed into a 1982 Coupe in FWD. What are some other mods that can be done.
I know that installing an EJ motor would be better option but I won't to stick with the standard type engine.

As an owner of a 1982 Leone coupe I'm quite glad to see someone intending to do one up. I didn't fully enjoy my Leone until it received its EJ, but hey, horses for courses.

1984 and later heads have the larger valves. Gives you another year model to keep an eye out for!

But you've basically got the gist of a warm EA81 build, all the standard sort of stuff like the 32/36 DGV Weber, high comp pistons (careful the ACL replacements for the EA71 are actually EA81 items) etc etc. If you have a look at the EA performance thread on these forums it will give a basic outline of what to do to a stockie, but by the sounds of things you're cracking her open, so may as well shave the heads a little or maybe deridge the combustion chambers and look at forced induction .

There is a mob who do a road performance EA81 camshaft, I forget who but someone else on here will no doubt pipe up about them. Don't use an aviation one for obvious reasons (not enough duration).


Personally I've only researched this stuff and never really put it into action. Whenever my EA81's have died I've always ended up stuffing something else in there (see my sig), only regret being that EA82!

Has anyone used or can recommend the camshaft to use with the mods I will be completing.

If I was to shave the head to increase compression ratio, this will alter the camshaft timing. Is there a way to adjust for this?

yep. drive it harder.


using Watson race cam 16/56 ground my cam Sydney nsw year 2000 $92, shaved 1.0 mm off each head, tuned as required
