carb L >>MPFI or turbo

Post by spike » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:28 pm

where to start
right now i feel i have a couple of options.
some worth while others not...........

i could either build the EA82 i have in the wagon, build it with cams, custom twin carbs ported and polished head. basically put a hell of a lot of time into the engine but little money and get maybe a slight increase in power.

i could put an MPFI engine in, cut down and modifiy the wiring loom to run the engine but not have all the other goodies, more power.
-cams if i could afford it
-maybe mod the computer and fuel injection system
-heads
problem with this is i havent got a spare MPFI engine sitting around, and id have to find one i could afford, within reach.

and finally an EA82T. enough said........
problems being the wiring loom again, i havent got much experience with these engines. i know there are a lot of mods i could do but again cost, i havent just got a spare engine sitting around here and im only on my p's for another 6 months, and the car would be modified and all.

An ej converison is not possible, cost and legality in SA

ok a couple of questions
-does anyone see anything ive missed
-modifying a ECU to fit the subaru? whos done it and got the drawings??
-getting the engine, what costs would i be looking at?

or my final option and suggestion, leave the L series standard, put my effort and money into the honda and then when i can be bothered selling the L seires and everything i have with it, or put it in the shed for that matter, and buying an early liberty when i find one in my price range or that FOZ that i really want =)
cheers

Modded MPFI or NA EA82 - why bother? (as previously discussed)

EA82T - only legal set up in SA. Buy one that is already done or stuff all work required.

Go option 3 - the Honda
73 Yamaha DT3 250

08 Ford BF wagon - LPG FTMFW

14 Toyota Kluger - goodness!

sounds like you analyse and procrastinate like some others in here (self included) for long enough maybe you will be on full licence by then :)

You sound to have got a lot of experience as a kid already, keep going with cheap arse EA82 stuff then progress on to EJ - sure I will do same one day when I got EA stuff out of my head and my shed. Thought I'd never leave the EA81's alone. May still turbo one EA81 to see whhat breaks too .

yeah seems stupid to analyse it all
Ive had the honda in the shed for about 2 months now and only just had the motor running last weekend.
I might as well throw my money into it for now and then upgrade when i get the money time and space.
Just hope i dont fall off the fourm

complete efi vortex gl

Post by SCOOBIDOO » Wed Sep 15, 2010 5:30 pm

I am just about to part out a complete 85 model vortex rally blue colour.
it has the efi engine and runs , this car is in excellent nick and even has chilly air cond still.

the entire efi of the engine is fine, i ran this engine for the prior owner in 2005 and it was fine then,at the time it had a bad earth and efi was not functional....once we tightened the earth i fired and ran well...but this engine sat for the last 5 years and seazed in the bores from lack of use..i got it running but the front 2 cylinders are down on compression, due to the corrosion etc.
Its a shame the owner did not start it once every six months cos it would still be a good vortex...anyway these things happen

I was going to strip the bits i wanted to keep as a run an ea82t ,and offload the rest for a small amount, i will get around $200 for scrap at the moment for the car etc and all the bits i think i would want like ecu / 3 plug ( i already have a few of these) , the heads, take the fuel pump off it i put on to get it running, prolly cut out the harness to keep with the ecu for a future possible conversion ...etc etc

We all know these dont wreck out well but there is some bits here and there that can be used........ call me if you want any bits Dan 0412 779 164 i am near Elizabeth.

That's sacrilege to scrap a vortex - unless its already in a yard. Even more so if the body is in very good condition...

You know what you should do if the body is in good nick - drop an STi drive train in it  Then watch the SS commos and RX8/6 turbo falcos in the rear view mirror!

Cheers

If comp is low one cylinder I wonder if an oil additive in a silver can seen at auto pro would refresh things. Well done on your growing Subi stable spike :)

my first simple trick will be to put a thicker oil down the barrel and crank it over.
then move up a step to the commercial stuff
and then itll be a choice whether i bother to fix it by stripping it down, or just stripping what ii want and selling what else is left.

That is one of the cleanest looking vortex's I've seen in a LONG time!

If you need bits, post in the vic section as centre road wreckers tend to have a token vortex if not a few ;)

Cheers

187000k,s from original bennie,@ 1090kg,s kerb weight an sti 220kw drive line would be a very nice upgrade...

1/ question..do all vortex,s come with the re-moveable roof section as this has or is this standard?

I would have proceeded with that mod had i not already been enjoying this with 15psi subi power....
around 700kg,s and 4 wheel discs..its an enviable package , total chassis up construction work, and entire vehicle build carried out personally with passion. Totally engineered in QLD/NSW and now S.A My dream to reality.
