How complicated is front to all wheel drive conversion in a subaru liberty i understand you would need a gear box, drive shaft and rear diff and a few other bits and pieces but is it that simple or costly?

Yeah pretty much you just need to swap all the parts over. Your best bet is to get hold of an entire donor vehicle to get all the parts from one place, much easier.

or sell it and get AWD model... due the age, work and costs involved would be better off getting AWD model..
You still can use the FWD clutch, all you would need is gearbox, drive train, AWD fuel tank, rear diff cradle, rear CVs, rear suspension and rear diff..
Cheers

As AP has said, it all just bolts in but will take time and it's easier to just buy an awd model!
