EJ20G into 1989 Vortex 4WD

G'day all,

Well I've finally bowed to peer pressure
and advice on my $ vs KW situation
with my EA82T in my vortex.

Yesterday I picked up 2 EJ20G's and am
rebuilding 1 at first to put in my vortex.

Planning for standard + forged pistons,
ARP headstuds, Cometic heads gaskets
and portwork.

Any advice on limits of porting? Build issues
and special things to look out for?

Am also looking for at least a digital
manual for a 92 RS liberty to assist
in rebuilding with specs.

It's has begun!

Cheers,

Sam

Have a look at RSlibertyclub.org forum, there are many very detailed threads on engine rebuild specifics.

Checking it out.
I keep reading terrible things about
the tappets on them!?

Yeah, there was a factory recall by Subaru in Australia, they were paying to upgrade the original heads to early WRX ones.
If you have original RS heads the tappets will get noisy eventually if they haven't already. Doesn't really affect anything but it's damned annoying.

I've had 3 Ea82's, I'm used to it lol

so should I be looking for a shim and
bucket set up? Is it something people
generally sell seperately to heads?

Ive started pulling apart, Cleaning and cataloging all parts of the EJ20G now.
Some parts were shiny, some not so shiny :(

Looks like i'll need to get the crank machined as there is a bit of corrosion
But in all, it seems ok.

Very good combo.. tried and tested with great results :) Make sure you use the WRX pistons in the EJ20G block.

Much better items in the wrx?

Nah.. more so the valve to piston clearance.. When Subaru recalled the RS Turbo cars we had to change all pistons and heads with the version 1 & 2 WRX gear.

Another point also comes to mind.. What manifold are you planning on using?

The wrx one so I can have the under manifold
intake turbo piping and the runners are longer

Nice.. just remember because they are taller they do touch the bonnet on the XT.

Space the bonnet up lol

looks like I will be spacing crossmember
down, lift kit blocks?

yeah.. spacers work on the engine crossmember but carefull of the ground clearance of the sump. It will be an awesome car once done

Hmm they do look pretty tall now I look at them.

Thanx mate, I hope so too!

I'd love to go to suby meet with it.

Sounds good mate! That was a quick score on the RS turbo motors!

All the best, I can't wait to hear about what you think of the EJ turbo, hope you're upgrading to crossbred brakes as well ;)

Cheers
