does anyone have good engine bay pics of how the stocko a/c lines go through the engine bay (or how they should be)??? especially the mounting points, well anything of interest really...thanks!

I'm currently installing aircon into my Brumby at the moment. I have so far been to about 20 wrecking yards and its is staggering the difference between aircon systems in MY vehicles. I have 4 condensors, all the connections are in different spots. 5 different mounting brackets for the compressor. 4 different compressors, 3 dryers, all have different mounting systems and connections for the wiring. The only things that seem to be in common is the actual airbox that sits behind the passenger glove box, the on/off switch. Even the mounting brackets for the relays that sit in the engine bay different from each vehicle. My advice is a find a car that has EVERYTHING to do a complete swap, or you will end up chasing your tail like I am at the moment. The other consideration is wether the compressor and condensor can handle the R134A gas, if you pull the parts from a vehicle that been sitting in a wrecking yard for years, most likely going to cause trouble!

so what's with the gas?

Refrigerant R12 was used in car A/C systems from their very beginning, right up until the 90's. It has been shown that R12 damages the environment by depleting the earth's Ozone layer. The major governments around the world (including Australia) have signed protocols promising the reduction and eventual complete fazing out of ozone depleting substances. In Australia, it is still legal to use R12 in a car A/C system, providing that stringent criteria are met, such as the system being leak free, having a usably dated filter/receiver/drier fitted, also having both low and over pressure shut off switches fitted, etc. Although it is legal to use, the cost of R12 has escalated to the point of it being uneconomical.

The alternative for old R12 systems is to modify them in order to make them suitable for the use of R134a refrigerant, which is the standard refrigerant used in all new cars. This modifying process to make an old R12 system ready for R134a is commonly referred to as Retrofitting. It basically involves modifying the service ports of the R12 system so they will accept R134a service hoses, replacing the filter/receiver/drier, changing the original mineral oil to a synthetic oil compatible with R134a and replacing some of the "O-ring" seals.

hychill is a propane based refrigerant in use in cars and has some pretty superior qualities, another is that itis component called propane is a little flammable in the wrong places

you still need a pic of a radiator with those switches?

and you got the wire diagram to help?

wiring diagram definately helps - i know where to wire up to now. if you can send or post a pic of the switches that'll be great.

really needing a picture (or 2) of the gas hardlines as well so i know where they go through the engine bay

Is left hand drive but imagine pipe work entering otherside on firewall

that bottom one is the most useful! thanks! very handy because i can see what's going on beside the fuse thingie and coolant overflow tank.

checkers what's at samford? do you have a spare condenser you could sell me???

My RX is at Samford.

Dunno about a condensor, might have but I hate selling stuff as it is a PITA.

Since your a fellow RX owner if you get stuck I have a complete 86 Leone with A/C up the back which has ice cold a/c in it so must have a good condensor that you maybe able to pull one out of.
