The main housing (including bellhousing) is different in length, as EA box is 12mm shorter around where bellhousing is. I'll upload a picture of EA box tomorrow night.

This is a picture (sorry its poor quality as taken from camera phone) of EA gearbox.. Now you can see the difference between EJ & EA.

Also to add to the mix is the fact that the AWD pinion shaft passes THROUGH the lower gearset shaft. The EA's pinion shaft is solid and shares the same shaft with the lower gear set so there is no interchangability of the AWD rear casing to the EA gearsets OR of the pinion shafts to retain the EA ratios while bolting up the AWD rear casing. Make sense?

Also steptoe, have you updated your first post with what you've foundout through this thread?

Cheers

Hey, can anyone post up the ratios of each gear for the EA 3.7 ratio box, EJ 3.9 (gen 1) box and EJ 3.7 (gen 2) box?

Just for reference ;)

Ok, found this on the super reliable wikipedia:

Stock common L series gearbox:

Gear Ratios: 1st 3.545 2nd 1.947 3rd 1.366 4th .972 5th .780, Rev 3.416 Low Range 1.59

L series AWD lockable centre box ratios:

Gear Ratios: 1st 3.545 2nd 2.111 3rd 1.448 4th 1.088 5th .871, Rev 3.416 Low Range 1.196

Do these seem right?
