gearbox stuck in fwd..

i know this is a hell common question, but this is abit different
just put a new box in my wagon to find its 'stuck' in fwd. Its like its bound up, but thats almost impossible as it was stuck when the box was out the car with no driveshafts attached.
i can push real hard on the lever and pretty much just bend the lever and the box does nothing. All the linkages are correctly hooked up.
Ive also just put some new fairly expensive oil in it, but after afew kms i might dump it and put a lightweight shockproof oil in. (the oil on the dipstick seems abit milky)
ive spun the wheels hoping to maybe knock it around abit and it might miraculously pick 4wd but im not holding my breath.
any ideas??
thanks
(edit: oops...put in the wrong area

mods please move if you feel the need)

im pretty sure on the L part time boxes where the linkage attactes to the selector part on the box, that shaft/rod turns and can be 180deg out or there abouts, may be worth a look, just remember some thing like that when changing boxes in the RX a few year ago.

yeh you did undo that part of it too.
but you also said you couldnt move any of the selector rods when the box was out of the car, not even with a hammer. might mean its farked.
but for your sake i hope its the former.

Where did u get this box from?? Sorta sounds like it has had water in it.
There is a bolt on the side of the gear box (sorry i can't be more specific without showing it to you)... Under which is a spring and a ball bearing... this changes the tension of the 4wd leaver. Perhaps this ball bearing is rusted in place. I know without this ball bearing the leaver falls in and out of 4wd with no effort at all. The bolt is close to and is aligned with where the 4wd selector leaver goes into the box.

found out what it was..thanks for the replies
the selector shaft was 180degrees out. Had to bash it around with a hammer and it clicked into place. Then the bar which runs through the transfer case ceased into position. So i bashed it through with a hammer, and it got stuck. THought i stuffed up, but managed to get it bashed through the other way, layered it in wd40 and smashed it through about 20 times. Now it selects all gears and all 4wd gears!
wooohoooo!!!
thanks everyone especially you Bryan! woulda still been up shit creek without your advice.

no problems, been there done that, we scratched our heads for a while as well, then we tried it on another box we had on floor... and worked it out!
