Not much can be done with a Ea81.
you can try installing EA71 pistons to boost the compression.
you could also try and increase air flow into the engine and advance the timming..
It's much easier installing a EJ engine. You can get better power and relaiblity out of a stock EJ than a worked EA.

Put in an EJ22 but stick a little plate over the top of the EJ22 stamp that says "EA81", nobody will know, and I'm semi serious about that

You young guys are in such a hurry to go fast, speed isn't everything.Just think about why they've made these laws.

What about an EJ18?
Still 1800. Non turbo.
Maybe even be able to stretch to a larger EJ and use the EJ18 engine cover?

How much longer have you got to drive on P plates for?
Edit: missed the post about your 2 years on P's
In that case... save ya dosh an' go FULLY SICK BRO. when the two years are up.
And in the meantime... do some advianced driver courses.
Going fast is good.... being able to BRAKE is more important.

Excellent point
The best I money i have spent on a car's performance was doing advanced driver training and later a introduction to rallysport
ie investing in my ability as a driver. Best thing is, you take it with when you change cars.
Teaches you how to drive not just operate the throttle and brake - not always about HP...

You can do a lot to EA81, currently 1mm oversized pistons, dual port heads (read valves swapped intake / exhaust) Wild Cam, weber and snorkel. This is very realiable and quite torque not the same as an EJ, although day to day you wouldn't notice the difference. I like my trusty little EA81, it is bulletproof and light to. Thats my 2 cents worth.
