Looking beyond IHI/Mitsy Turbos .

Hi all , nothing that I really like for an EA82T from either IHI or MHI because most are unsuitable or too low tech .

Sad fact of life is that to get a reliable turbocharger you really need a fresh one to have a known quantity . I was surprised to find that neither IHI/MHI are very affordable to rebuild so many 2nd hand ones are not going to be an economic reality . The ones I though would give good affordable results either don't have suitable turbine housings for Subaru apps or were STi so stupid money new .

The Garrett GT Ball Bearing family is much more familiar territory for me and has lots of incremental variations so I can size something to work pretty well for my engine .

Being fairly crude in the heads means that most mild EA82T's are probably finished by ~ 200 odd Hp so one of the small/mediun GT25 or GT28 BB turbos should work well .
The way I see it getting an EJ turbo like a TD04 to fit means non std up pipe and dump pipe flanges so using Garret patterns is really no more work . What would take some effort is the noin factory water and oil plumbing but that only fiddly not a biggie .

Most probably won't go this deep but there is a good site with lots of compressor and flow maps - turbobygarrett if interested .
The one I'm interested in is called a "GT2560R 707160-9" and is the same spec as the Garrett/HKS GTSS Skyline GTR upgrade turbo (x2) .

Note the turbine efficiency at 75% , ignore the pic because thats not it .

Its housings may not be suitable but the Nissan SR20 style turbine housing in the same 0.64 A/R size would be the logical replacement for a single turbo app .

Still researching , cheers A .

The only question for me is if Garretts single turbo type compressor and turbine housings fit that particular cartridge rather than the compact GTR RB26 style ones .
Looks good so far and will very likely look like an SR20 style GT28BB turbo in its final form .

Cheers A .
