Hi All - I want to transplant the aircon system from 91 wagon into my 88 non aircon wagon. But how do I de-pressurise it? I'm also going to be fitting EJ20 motor at the same time so I'll use EJ compressor with all the rest being EA system. Any tips anyone?
Thanks.

Call an auto electrician. If you are caught letting the gas out into the atmosphere i think it is a $15000 fine.
Also check the fittings are the same on the EJ compressor. Different years have different internat fitting sizes. You may need to have hoses made.

yeah I can confirm the EJ compressor has different connectors for the pipes. This will need to be done by an aircon place. If your getting this done then you might as well strike up a working relationship with them first by getting the gas removed from your old setup first.

At the risk of starting sh_t/being flamed… Yes, its illegal (and you can not plead ignorance as you’ve been told its illegal) however as we all know there is heaps of other illegal information/projects on here.
Maddog, just dump it… just do not be seen/caught doing it.
Make sure other are not around. Then just undo/crack the seal of the bolt/s on your air con compressor. You’ll hear the gas start to hiss out, just walk away from the car for a few minutes while the gas empties (if your really self conscious about it just place a clean rag over your mouth/nose while your cracking the seal on the bolts).
Once the gas stops hissing and you think that its all gone just wipe the components down (and again if your really self conscious about it just place a clean rag over your mouth/nose) and continue to dismantle/remove the system. Its that simple.
Good luck with it.

yeah good one moron.
Lets everyone just screw the atmosphere.
Hey i know why not rip off our exhaust systems and cat converters so as we can all die a much faster death via global warming.
sorry for the rant.
Maddog, call them up and get some advice, im sure its a simple answer and will require little if any extra effort.

All Good - thanks for the info guys - I asked at the automotive dept at TAFE (where I teach I.T.) and they are willing to train me in the use of the equipment and then let me take it home and do the job. I'll have to do 2 because it has to come out of my 91 first and then I have to degass the impreza. Oh and you were right it's a $15,000 fine if you get caught. per incident. $30,000 for me!
PS I was just going to undo bolts and run away... but now I know better!!

You should read up on cat converters - they were designed to rid citys of their smog and in the process of solving this problem have created worse pollution for the atmosphere. Go figure.
I'm sure everyone will be running out to crack their AC gas at from reading this thread.
Crack it over night if need be. You'd be creating more pollution by driving the car on a trailer to the nearest joint and back to get it done.
