awesome effort, glad to hear its running after an epic built, its so freaking rewarding after so much blood and tears:D

couple of questions....

what were the wiring changes that needed to be done for the apexi ecu. i have a similar issue, car will run on standard ecu but as soon as you plug in the apexi ecu it wont fire. i have the 93-96 rex engine and wiring, sorry as in the four plug ecu harness

earlier in the thread i noticed you installed a new clutch, what type was it??? just curious becasue i'm running a cable clutch setup myself and even though i've just replaced my old one with new heavy duty type i'm still getting a lot of clutch slip. its not a hoon mobile so i do't take off at a zillion mph from a set of light but it still slips

and finally whats in SA, i've only just moved down here from brissy and am way out of the loop in relation to whats happening around town

again nice work8-)

cheers
To tinker or not to tinker that is the question?

Ah yes the Guru Dave so many cars in WA wouldn't be running if Subarino wasn't around to sort them out.

Do we get video of the engine running?

Cool great to here its alive. Can't wait to see what it drives like.. Will it be lifted as mine with a 5stud conversion soonish?

I can't wait to get my rear end done properly:)
It already has 3" lift and the 5 Stud conversion will be done later. Due to time and moving the workshop, I doubt it will happen before I/we go away to SA.

There is a few hours gone into her and I'm really happy she is almost there. Few more things to go but should be good.

My engine is the V5 with the 3 large plug ECU. I'm not sure if they will be the same, but Dave located the install instructions (which we never got as mine was secondhand) and it showed which ones need to be done. I have a brand new V4 PFC for my 22B, which I have the instructions inside the box, if you need? or you should be able to find them on the net.

I used a modified clutch from a company over here in WA (unfortunately has now closed down) and they used to strip them down and rebuild using double spring tensions. I'm not sure but I'm guessing there would be other places around Aus that would do this kinda work. If you get it done, I'd highly recommend you strengthen the clutch fork.

As for stuff in SA to do I'd have NFI but I told my boss (he lives over there), I wanted to go camping/fishing/4wding in SA, so he recommended Coffin Bay. Bennie thought this would be a great opportunity for every AUSubaru member that loves getting out and about to meet up, so he has started a thread, so have a search and come and join in and hope to see you there.

TOONGA
Yes he is.. he's a legend.

Sorry, no video of the event. I think you wouldn't have seen much, as the AFM wasn't working the fuel (black smoke) was pouring out the back and filling up the new workshop. Maybe once I have another AFM and finish up a couple of things in the engine bay.

Was great to see it fire up :D Lucky the misfire was just Paul's little stuff up otherwise he wouldn't of left the shop happy last night ;) Will be good to see the car in action in a few months. I'm excited to see how that gearbox goes and how it holds up against the turbo motor

It was great to see... although you should have seen it when the dodgy AFM was in it.. was true rally spec with rotational idle, thick black smoke and fully open exhaust system :D

Now Taza.. remember what happens in the workshop stays in the workshop... lol

I didn't see any 'stuff up' I was just checking the anti-lag feature on the PowerFC :p

I believe the gearbox will handle it because I'm not going to give this car a thrashing.. I has a nice blue 2 door for that ;)

Which? the L or the 22B? Don't think I'll be taking the 22B to the beach.. would be fun though :p

Yes, the L will be my every 2nd Sunday beach car until she completely rusts out.

The "L" of course, I remember once saying we could put a 3 inch lift kit on the 22B but the looks I got from everyone in the room kyboshed that thought :)

Thats correct - I was talking to Brett about it lately and I think I installed an circlip as a spacer in that area. Because the bearing was narrower than other one.

I hope so, it worked perfectly on the bench but the big test will be on the road.. or better still.. offroad :D
AlpineRaven wrote:Awesome read out Paul, Specially this centre diff which Ive never seen before... Getting there and very interested in this task youve done! Keep up the good work.
Cheers mate. It's been taking it's time as I'm trying to make it look as factory fit as possible. The extra weight in the front appears to be bringing the front down more but probably fix that with the dual spare wheel carrier on the back ;)
AlpineRaven wrote:Thats correct - I was talking to Brett about it lately and I think I installed an circlip as a spacer in that area. Because the bearing was narrower than other one.
From memory, I had to get a new bearing that had the EJ O.D. with the EA I.D. and then I had my machinist make a filler/spacer ring to fit prior to the circlip.

Thanks Rick and yes it feels great to hear running. Still a little more work to go with the dual range cable and then hooking up the vacuum stuff for the centre diff lock but hopefully it's ready for the SA trip.

I'd love to move back home but so much happening over here with the new shop and all. Maybe when I retire :-(

So please correct my ultra-quick review to summarize ;)
But this build is an AJ20 turbo engine mounted to an EJ5MT's bell housing, fitted to an EA82 (L series) dual range case with RX gearsets?

Or is this AWD with RX locking center to a dual range 4x4 with 1.59:1 low on a WRX engine in an L series with WRX brakes on 15" rims?

SICK!!!! that fire-up video sounds wicked BTW!
Glad to glance at this build again and see its coming together with test drives to boot!
The first time I read the dictionary, I thought it was a book about everything.

Something closer to this, but I believe on 14 inch rims and no WRX brakes, just really really good L series discs all round ;)

Paul will be able to fill you in more about it!

Yessir.. it's an EJ20 Turbo engine from a 1999 Impreza, now running with a PowerFC ECU, mated to the XT Turbo AWD with Centre Diff Lock box, that has had it's front casing replaced with the 2000 Outback gearbox front halves, plus the box has had the EA82 Low Range fitted at the same time.

I used the EA rear casings, so I could retain the L Series gearbox crossmember and tailshaft. From underneath the car, most people couldn't tell what's been changed ;)
suparu wrote:Or is this AWD with RX locking center to a dual range 4x4 with 1.59:1 low on a WRX engine in an L series with WRX brakes on 15" rims?
Yessir.. you have it ;) unfortunately the brakes haven't been changed yet. It's still running the standard front (discs) and rear (drums) but this will change once I recover from Christmas holidays.

The rims are 14" until we change to 5 stud.
suparu wrote:SICK!!!! that fire-up video sounds wicked BTW!

Thankyou sir.. I was very pleased when she fired up. Dave (Subarino) worked his magic on the loom and because the 1999 Impreza has the factory fitted immobilizer, Dave had to work a little more than normal.

Test drives aren't too far away.. I would like to sort out the Dual Range cable and the Centre Diff Lock system but this has to wait until the vehicle hoist is fitted in my new shop.

Yeah Bennie.. and really hard to not use these rims when I go 5 stud. I like them and even managed to get 2 spares for the spare wheel carrier.. they might even end up back on the Vortex.

There's a liberty kicking around benders with a set of these rims - so they are out there for the 5 stud ;)
