Clutch

Post by BlackMale » Thu Sep 14, 2006 1:32 pm

Hey Crew this is a question I have meaning to ask for quite some time. Some of the boys over this way have decided to move to a beefed up clutch, instead of the factory standards, which is cool. What I was curious to know (without waiting to see what issues the boys may have) is by operating a more chunky clutch then standard then what becomes the next weakest component/s at risk of taking this load?

If you can somehow follow this basic logic my thinking is that the clutch close to the weakest component in the ‘driveline’ hence when you load it up she smokes, therefore if you strengthen the clutch and it will not smoke as easy then what is the next component/s at risk of taking this load?

Now I am not suggesting that the boys over here drive any more or less hard core then we do, however the reason I am asking is that the others are operating these beefed up clutches on a cars that are essentially 2WD that go 4WDing and in this case a majority of the time with my logic I think that the tyers would act as the weakest link in the ‘driveline’ however I am thinking about dropping 1 of these beefed up clutches into an AWD vehicle and I do not think that the tyres will act as the weakest link in this case hence my question about the next weakest component/s and what I am at risk of busting?

One thing most people over look it the clutch pedal 'pull' leaver.
I have snapped 2 in the last 12 months. Normally the bearing gets flogged out & rubs on the pedal making it feel heavier than normal. Then it twists & tears off. No more pedal movement! I don’t really see this as a design fault, just how many times has the 'pull' leaver been used in the life of the car??

I will have a look at my new set up when I get home & tell you the replacement bearings.

It cost me $20 & it won’t break. So I hope.

Major component, gearbox maybe ? Minor one the pedal box side can rip/tear as I found out and that bearing thing justin is talking about.

I have an AWD box in my Rx and have a high pressure clutch in it. I can still light up all 4s taking off on the dry road and have not yet broken anything (fingers crossed) i have a pretty good clutch lSD in the rear and run 17psi intercooler EA82T. I am not complaining about it at all. However on my last look down the release fork i have noticed a few cracks at the locating point. I am also working on the problem to produce one with better pivot arangements to relieve stress and lower the clutch pedal wieght.

Thanks for the in. I forgot all about that pull leaver, I used to run a heave duty cable years ago and now you mentioned it remember breaking it, I also remember what was in may pants from the noise when she let go. A standard clutch is sounding like the better option for the AWD box then maybe and consider a beefed up one for the 4WD, when the standard one dies – maybe.
