truck tech

Post by spike » Tue Dec 28, 2010 10:40 am

ok so this isnt 100% subaru based, but subaru drivers come from all walks of life so it seems fair to put it here and see about a response.

Im in need of a truck/transporter for a few things and as most of you know i like to be difficult and different. The truck will have to carry at least 2 cars, 1 on the bed 1 on a trailer, and these could be quite varied so it has to be pretty versatile, were talking my play car, my brothers rally car, my brother drift car, my offroad thats almost in the works and probably many others. It will also have to take a side loading grain tank and water tank for around the farm

Engine wise it has to be able to do 110 fully loaded (maybe 100 but ill look at laws late) cause i hate seeing people driving trucks on the highway at 80 cause thats all their town delivery trucks can do. So im looking at a diesel, maybe biodesel or better yet used cooking oil, turbo or supercharged again unsure about that.

Body will be the cab off an old dodge that i found in reasonable nick, not sure about chassis though maybe have to build one to my needs and get it engineered and all that jaz.

Any comments??

what's your budget?

I picked up a mint condition ex-US Army 6X6 M945 for only 60 grand last year.

Unimogs are the SHIZ!
3rd gear accelerator-less hillstart? YES PLEASE!

the diesels are good for 500k without serious faults, just check service history if any.
MB used to make bulletproof engines, the 110 straight six for example? sounds like a truck
and just as durable. a rediculous petrol engine.

parts will cost a bit but hopefully will be ok.

UNIMOG

older the better!

Cheers

There was one made in WA can't remember the name (ocko? Ocker?) it looked like a unimog, but Perkins diesel engine, go just about anywhere, a lot of tour coach people use them to go take tourists over the sandhills, my neighbour has one he reckons they are great. the unimogs are getting a bit long in the tooth now, and would I imagine cost a big buck to rebuild, being mercedes.

if its the ocker that im thinking of my dad knows it well
They used to use them as recovery vehicle for either the redex/repco trial or the aus safari. They go anywhere......... Slowley
I dont know how one would go fully loaded when i asked for 110

Unimog would be my first choice but they aren't cheap.

If you can find the OKA ( http://www.oka.com.au/ ) around the traps then make sure it's a good one as parts are hard to get hold of.

edit: here's some OKAs for sale.. http://www.carsales.com.au/all/aus/oka/

unimog or the OKA would be awesome so its going to have to take some looking and thinking about them whether i can find one in the price range thats good for my needs

the other option and possibly the more likely option is the dodge bitsa with a turbo deisel engine or somthing with our own body and chassis

ANOTHER option thats come up is a very old 60/70s? (seems it by the condition) toyota landcruiser long tray it needs a lot of work but then so does building a dodge bitsa =)

the vortex H-top put all the good bits you kept out of the AX7 in and lets go

i wood not want a ocker work on them and there in to much parts that u can only buy from them at big price it just like if u buy a MACK or a KW pay $$ for the name .. and trying to get any thing old and slow do 110 i hope u do well .. get a old bedford good old truck with a bit of late model runing gear that wood be good
the CFA in vic sell there old fire trucks that are 4x4 u wood get one of them for a bit more then u want to spend if had $100,000 could build a cool rig

yeah im a bit weary about paying for the name
There are some really nice old style ford lt 9000 coming through work and yeah i reacon one of them would be perfect but yeah cost and availability.

So phils on the same page as me, an old bedford or the dodge in my way with modern running gear probably Izusu or mitsubishi but ill see what i can find
