Brumby bonnet gas strut conversion attempt #1

Post by steptoe » Tue Apr 11, 2006 1:12 pm

watching a mate strip an old ED Falcon ex taxi , I noticed the boot lid gas struts were still there and working great considering how often a taxi boot lid must be opened and shut- not bad at all. Give him a few years and he'll forget that I got to them FIRST !!

Tidy little pair. The socket studs are $2.20 each. I made a mount bracket to sit at the front of the shock tower and an extension of the hinge by about 50mm for the other end, with a bent kink inwards to clear things

Just one strut is strong enough to hold bonnet up

Problem is the bonnet ain't strong enough. There is too much flex betweeen the hinge and the bonnet, so attempt number 2 is gonna be a mount fixed to the bonnet itself.

Another problem with #1 is that when shut completely the top end pops off. Got something to do with the angle of the dangle

I have noticed that I have set up as a triangular support whereas most factory jobs seem to have strut running within same plane as bonnet, that being bonnet mount is forward of body mount when closed

To Be Continued....

I used a Lazer KC tailgate strut. Mounted near the strut tower to a pin welded to the bonnet
