Impressive RX2 Conversion - Rally Car

Post by ToyRX » Sun Mar 14, 2010 5:03 pm

Had a local hillclimb today and was stoked to see another Leone turn up, this one was a 89 RX2 Omega Coupe.
The owner was not around when i went for a nosey but it was obvious it had a drivechain conversion done, from pearing through the bonnet scoop I thought it might be a WRX engine but the icooler was in a funny position, no wories i thought, I will catch the owner later....

Which I did...

when i asked what was under the hood he said an old 6 cylinder... XT6 I asked?
No SVX 2.7L
Cool!! Lets take a look I said, my mind trying to figure out SVX plus intercooler and getting a bigger grin by the second even before he popped the bonnet.

Very cool setup,

2.7l 6Cyl SVX motor with the pulleys where the radiator sits, rad in front of support, oil cooler in the bumper.
2 inch's behind EACH headlight was a foam air filter,
3 inch's behind each of these was a Mitsi GTO hair dryer,
each snail fed a intake pipe back to two intercoolers welded together and a simese end tank to the TBody.
Custom cams, internals and Link computer finish the deal....

Yes - a 2.7L twin turbo RX leone.......gulp - I think I have competition....

Behind that was a 6speed DCCD box, after all he got tired of blowing 5 speeds!!

Sorry no photos but if I see it again I will be sure to take some.

To say it was very rapid out of corners does not quite cover it - talk about TORQUE!!

So is it an XT6 ER27, or a SVX EG33?

I cant imagine an ER27 (basically an EA82 with 2 extra cylinders) holding enough boost to warrant a 6speed
Image

An EG33 on the other hand (a EJ22 with 2 extra cylinders) is quite capable of making a lot of power.

Either way, did you take any photos cos words can simply not describe how tight that engine bay must be

I'd say a ER27 for sure but we need photos or we'll have to ban this post :mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen: Just kidding but I'm really keen to see the pics

Maybe our NZ cousins got the poor box version SVX 2.7 litre like we dumped our 4 cylinder Bommodores on them when Charlie married Di

It was the ER27, you can't mistake that inlet manifold.
The guy said it was from an SVX and I am no expert of the old 6 banger girls so who was I to argue! Besides I have never seen a XT6 engine in the flesh before either.
No idea what boost it runs, but twin turbos in parallel....surely reasonable?

If it sounds like a GTO with foam air filters it will sound awsome! They sound like a jet, with twin turbos :)

Very nice video! Possibly a low boosted ER27? If so, a done up EJ20T should be able to make similar power?

I doubt it's low boost and no EJ20T could ever produce the same as a worked ER27TT

I just did a YouTube search for Subaru Omega :shock::shock: This car has balls. I can see why they had to swap those broken 5 speeds for a 6 speed. The launches are AWESOME !!

It didn't look back yard to me when i was looking under the bonnet, and running a Link computer it will need to have solanoid controled boost which i would suspect was robbed from a EJ20T setup.
Also runs on AvGas (100) so in my books......

AVGAS + Link Computer + turbo = not f#@king around

I would hate to think what it cost to build.

Of note - it also runs Nissan struts/hubs/brakes, something I have seen a few times now, not sure how the rear works tho.

homo wing? you serious?

with that much power it would need the wing and then some!

that thing would have fit perfectly into groupB rally. insanely over powered was pretty much the only rule in those days
