was discussing with my uncle (who is the head of mechanic team working top fueler of some description and all round rev head) whether or not he could do the conversion from an ea82 to the an ej22/20 when he put forward putting in the more powerful outback ej25 and ej25t i was just wondering the thoughts of people who really know these engines. obviously there is alot more work when putting these engines in with needing to upgrade breaks etc but would you consider it worth while?
cheers
conversion to ponder
There's bugger all difference with an n/a EJ25 over a EJ20/22.......maybe 10kw or so.
But yeah with Turbo EJ motors you'd really need to upgrade brakes etc. Totally easy solution is to get some EJ brakes from a liberty or WRX and buy the Crossbred brake converison kit. It's very simple to fit and allows you to put wrx brakes on. Bonus is it's a stud conversion kit too so you can run any mags off an EJ car too.

The other thing which increases the workload is gearbox choice. With all of the non turbo motors you can use an adaptor plate and upgraded clutch and run the original EA82 gearbox. Depends on what you plan to use the car for but if any offroading is involved stick with this gearbox.
If you plan to stay on-road then consider converting to whatever AWD gearbox matches the EJ engine. This involves shortening the tailshaft, shortening the EJ shifter linkages, bolting different bits of gearbox crossmembers together and possibly swapping inner CV cups - but nothing too difficult.
As to wether it's worth it well that's really up to you. I rekon it is. EJ20 turbo L series is a really fun car to drive around and if you can get the parts cheap enough it's well worth doing. At any rate, ANY EJ into an L series is a great thing, really turns them into a practical and use-able car when you ditch the EA!

I'll second that! The L's should've come from the factory with an EJ under the bonnet. My L is much more satisfying to drive now! And with the small bit of offroading I've done since the conversion the EJ is amazing compared to the EA.AndrewT wrote:At any rate, ANY EJ into an L series is a great thing, really turns them into a practical and use-able car when you ditch the EA!
Whatever EJ you go for you'll love it over the EA!
