Jeffs crossbred brake kit on MY Q??.s

Post by steptoe » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:59 pm

Who has done one on an MY? A look on the website shows what looks like just front brake kit. Is the kit a whole four wheels or is there a front kit and rear kit. What else is involved? Anyone got a list of what else has to be purchased off what models. Is there also a CV shaft mod involved?Keep the same master cylinder?

All your answers are on the website...

Check what comes with the kit - custom rear hubs, backing plates etc. Also the list of what you need to supply to make it work - "•Gen 1 vented or solid rear discs and callipers and Twin Piston, front callipers & disks. Rears can be from 2 or 4WD."

Check the part that says "What else do I need for my installation?"

"MY use 22 spline MY shafts with Liberty outer CV. CV’s available."

"•Brake master cylinder from an early Liberty or Impreza"

Having gone back to the website, "information" still did not spring out at me. These 22 spline MY CV shafts used would happen to be the auto FWD MY shafts wouldn't they? Because I had a pair for a few years with an EJ conversion in mind some time back (tim81coupe tip off) but threw them to make more room not believing I would ever need them. You'd only wanna use them in an AWD config wouldn't you? Mentally picturing what one would need after I get a fist full of dollars. Another sweetener from ~Keven in '10 ~ perhaps?

Need to google a look at the Honda hatchback mentioned too.

I think you can just get the suitable shafts ready made up from Jeff at Crossbred.

I guess the shaft options are as variable as the gearboxes that are appearing in the MY and L's.

I have started 'looking' at Imprezas out and about and noticed a '99 model GX with drums! The owner was equally surprised when he saw them after buying it new. When he needs rear shoes it gets a bit hard to find them as he is told the drums were finished with in '97 models. He may have a '97 with 99 compliance plates.

This raises another question: are the master cylinders different between disc/drum Imprezas and disc/disc? Should we avoid drum rear master cylinders with the crossbred kit in mind?

Drum brake master cylinders have what is called a residual line pressure valve fitted and this simply needs to be removed to use that master cylinder with an all disk setup.

OK. Thanks coxy, what does this valve look like? removal easy?
Actualy, I recall that I fitted a disc drum master to my L disc disc and got some really good brakes :)
