Which WRX rack fits L RX Turbo ?

Post by discopotato03 » Thu Feb 05, 2009 12:26 pm

Hi all , can someone tell me which Impreza WRX steering rack goes bolt in an L RX Turbo . I'm interested in less turns lock to lock and one of the early ones goes in I'm told .

I wouldn't be surprised if the L ones tie rods had to be transfered but that shouldn't be a biggie .

Cheers A .

The older gc8 racks will fit fine, you will need to run the l series tie rods on the impreza rack. You would be best finding a rack from a older ra sti as they have the least.

Thanks guys , I was hoping GC8 (all through and inc MY2000 ?) racks fitted up in the std L mounts and to the std L hydraulic hard lines at the rack housing .
I know of one in Victoria but if someone up here in Sydney can spare one in a rebuildable state ...

Just slightly off topic, but can you put an L series steering column in a MY?

just tried to fit a GC8 rack to my l series. It defintely wont work in an unlifted car, the angle of the input shaft is different so it fouls on the turbo dump pipe and the linkage isnt long enough either.

One day if I can find the time I'll remove a rack from an L series and a first gen Lib at the wreckers , from memory the ratio is not quite the same as an Impreza but it is a tad faster than a turbo L .

gc8 imprezza and early lib racks are interchangeable, so neither will bolt straight up to an unlifted L series. A rebuilt L series one is going back in mine. At least i have a spare for my RS now

bringing an old thread back to life (well not that old), but i'm looking at changing my steering rack in my L RX for a wrx one.

what's a good price for one? and is it only the GC8 wrx rack that works?

Should be able to use any rack.
A good rack from a GX liberty could cost around $100. You can get the quick ratio STI ones too, people can charge up to around 500 for these. Depends on kms and what kindof person is selling it tho.

Careful though, if you put an EJ component in your L series it won't be an L series anymore. If you are a true purist you wouldn't even think of doing something so horrific :)

Hmm my steering rack is almost cactus and there is a few gen 1 libertys at upullit at the moment.

Maybe I should consider grabbing one for my L Series.

From memory the series one Libs had a fractionally faster rack ratio than an RX L so provided it all falls it that would be a bonus .

Oh one thing, if you happen to get a "sporty" steering rack from a Legacy, the splined part that passes through the engine crossmember is quite abit bigger, you need to grind the hole out abit. Also you need to put +12V on the "sporty" solenoid otherwise the steering is fairly heavy, although Alex found it acceptable without the solenoid engaged on his.

So if I put a nissan "go faster part" on my EA, its still an L series??? :p

I didn't know the lib/impreza racks are a direct drop in... interesting. And I would've thought that a rack with more turns would be better suited to offroad driving as it wouldn't be as difficult to turn or wouldn't throw the driver out the window when there's feedback from the steering... My thoughts anyway.

Cheers

Bennie

PS - I'm loving my powersteering since shoving that in with the EJ!
