Improve Low Rev Perfromance of EZ30D?

Post by btvbtvbtvbtv » Tue Dec 30, 2008 11:43 am

I have a 2005 Outback 3.0R. Magic car...except poor torque at low revs (ie below 3,500 - which is not that low). Torque at revs beyond this are great. Unfortunately the car behaves like a 4 cyl below this point and like an 8 above it???

My understanding is the lower performance is due to the way the AVCS (valve management system) works by limiting valve opening at lower revs (ref http://www.autoweb.com.au/cms/A_55733/t ... ticle.html) - I suspect to meet emissions requirements moe the "optimum performance". Has anyone seen/heard of/used anything to improve this. As atated - I only really want to improve low end performance. If it improves high end performance that's a bonus but not my main goal

These cars are reknown for poor in-city fuel economy. I reckon it's because you tend to rev the guts out to get them moving.

Any advice greatfully accepted

Many people think that late engines make no torque at low revs because of emissions reasons but I know some that reckon it's done intentionally so the manufacturers can use lighter cheaper running gear and not have issues in the warranty period .

My opinion is that a three litre engine with its torque peak at 4200 rpm is a joke , a three litre 4 valve engine in a 1500 kg car should feel torquey and peppy .

For what it would cost you I think you're better off selling it and getting something that does what you want .

maybe its just your car :)

my old man has a 3.0h6 lib and its abit of a weapon. definately doesnt lack any torque.

You have the EZ30D, which is the lower output engine with 154kW at 6000 rpm and 282Nm at 4400 rpm. It has siamesed exhaust ports and a lower tune for unleaded fuel.

The EZ30R from the B spec lib is a weapon with its Dual AVCS and separate exhaust ports.
It makes 184kW at 6600 rpm and 304Nm at 4200 rpm.

I doubt your engine is actually lacking in torque, its more likely that because peak torque is reached so high in the rev range, it just feels slow down low.

A guy on ozliberty.org got an extra 22kw out of his EZ30R with just an exhaust and an Ecutek computer upgrade. Ultimate 3rb Mods +22kw Atw

I read on the MRT site where they are making improvements on this matter and the auto changing issues. I don't remember the URL, just that it was the MRT Forums.

I have a 2001 h6 outback
I dont think that it is low in torque, it just that it produces lots of power when it revs.
Part of the problem is that 1st gear is to tall.
When I have the time and money I plan to swap the 4.1 diffs for 4.44 front and rear.
This will make the auto gearbox ratios the same as what used as the 4 cylinder.
This should help a lot for off road use.

I have a '03H6 and I find it lacking in the torque department also. Of course, hit 4k and it is like it comes on boost and flies. To compare I have driven a 3.5L v6 magna some 30,000k's and it had torque, bucketloads of it. I have just bought a 2.8L patrol, known for being a slug but sitting on the highway towing 900kg of boat for the last two days the only time I had to drop back from 5th gear was because someone in front of me had slowed enough that it wasn't making boost. The same trip done in the outback would see 3rd gear frequently, just to maintain 95km/h Not bad for a car with more torque on paper than the turbo diesel...

Oh yeah, towing the boat in the patrol, going up hill in a 50km/h zone, would maintain 50 at 30-50% throttle in 4th gear, at something like 1800rpm!

Mine is missing torque as well. It's a pain because the auto wants to keep changing down gears, but when it does that the thing just flies so it changes up again.... If it wasn't under warranty I'd find a way to give it some turbo treatment.

Having said that when you actually want to drive at 6000rpm it's a rocket!
Which reminds me, need to install a switch to disable the stupid traction control...
