G'Day All,

I had a browse through the lighting threads but couldn't find a discussion on what anyone might recommend for driving lights. I'm hoping to mount four rectangular lights accross a sports bar on a Brumby. I looked ARB's range of IPF lights, but might be a little overkill. Especially if buying two pairs. I'm concidering NARVA at the moment. Any thoughts?

I was thinging buying one spread pair and one pencil pair.

Hi Dane if you are going to spend the money on two sets of lights i would buy one set of HID lights. Dave has got them in his brumby and they are very good, he has replaced the brumby bulbs with HID bulbs they make a big difference hope it helps

Narva do make a good light. I have a pair of 160/115 Ultima on the roof of my 'L' series wagon the work very well, but not as good as the Lightforce 170's on my bull bar....

I use a set of round 100 hellas, my sisters L has the rectangular driving lights that work very well. I'd also give the Navra's a go too. Their round driving lights are good and very versitile in the way they can be mounted.

Really it comes down to how much you want to spend and personal preferance...

Narva 175 series combination spots will be more than adequate in blinding people at 400 metres.

You could really be a smart arse and wire in 300 watt aircraft landing lights...love it when people flash me and I flash them back.

Main thing is what performance are you expecting and how many $$ are you willing to spend ?

personally I think you're better off sticking them on the bull bar or in the grill because you can see better with them then, even though they don't look as cool. But the HID ones are the go I'm assuming their cheaper than when I last looked at them. Also I good cheap option is to just buy H4 lenses and put in better bulbs (don't use the blue ones if you plan on driving through any fog at night this winter). I use cibie high beam lenses too they are the bomb!

I have a set of "insert brand here" 6in lights with HID inserts which give off heaps of light and all up where about $200 ish. If i remember the brand i will put it up

I've used Lightforce 170s and also a pair of Hella Rally 4000s (the xenon HID ones). I have the Hella's on my current car...both are great, however there is a significant price difference.

The Lightforce 170s are around low 300s, and the Hella's will set you back 3-4 times that (thankfully I got the Hella's less than half price - long story!) However the difference between the two isn't that great. For a bit over 300 bucks, the 170s give you the best light for your dollar by far. However on the 170s I ran one spread/one pencil, and the Hellas (due to being more powerful) I run 2 spreads. More so because I'm mostly using them for roos, and trying to light up the sides of the road is really important for me rather than seeing 1km down the road. Howevery everyone has different preferences.

The Hella's light though does strain your eyes less at night...but if I had to pay full price for either, I certainly couldn't justify spending the extra amount.

Heart a lot of people say they liked Lightforce...both cars of mine were Fozzies, so I had to stick to the smaller lights (the big ones would have looked stupid/blocked airflow). But dad was impressed with my 170s, so he ended up getting the Lightforce 240s on his Prado and if you drive his car at night you could find play football in front of the car they're so bright!

If I still had my 170s I'd invite to show you them working at night and I'm sure you'd be impressed!

it is illegal to use spotlights on the roof onroad?

also wouldn't bumper/bullbar mount show better perception of rocks lumps.
but i guess roofmount you can see over stuff.

i'm also looking at buying some spotties, has anyone had theirs stolen or problems of that relation, ie carpark adjustment.

post some pics would be awesome

Roof lights are best used offroad in my opinion. The extra shine I used to get through the cab was annoying after a while. I ended up selling them off and fitting some HID driving lights on the bullbar. I doubt they are legal anywhere but I never had a drama in the couple of years I had the roof lights fitted.

What happened to the original poster ? If they are still reading this can you advise us what your $$ limit is, as this will probably render alot of these opinions useless to you. If you have 2 grand to spend, get some lightforce HID's in 35 watt. If you have about $150 to spend find some nite stalkers or Narvas. There are ALOT of different lights in the middle bracket of late 200 to early 500 for a pair. Spend every sent you can afford if you want performance.

Onroad use of roof mounted spotties = illegal, in victoria i know it is anyway. I really don't think a cop would pull u up for it.

Stolen or carpart adjusted driving lights: never had this problem on any of our cars fitted with lights, you just need to be careful when parking...
Never had a set stolen, but that said I have heard of people ages ago having theirs stolen. You can get bolts that need a special socket to get them off, this will stall them hopefully enough to move on.
