Alternator issues?

hey guys im sure theres a simple answer for this one.
just recently as im driving ill see my voltage drop to around 11-12 volts and the brake fluid and charge dash lights are half lit. this seems to come and go.

so obviously my alternator is dropping out- does this mean i just have a loose belt or is it maybe another electrical problem. or time for a new alternator.

btw my alternator i thought had been recently overhauled.

cheers
matt

ahh i should of asked the trusty mechanics on my msn first. of course it would most probably be my fuseable link. the one closest to the back of car has been blowing out a little bit of late.

try adding a direct charge wire directly from the alternator to the battery as well

thats a good garuntee to elimenate the voltage drops

Yeah great idea but there is no circuit protection if you bypass the fusible links. Your not only risking a fire but physically melting metal parts in your engine bay.

Best bet is to change out fusible links for circuit breakers.

I have been having the same problem. But my car just wouldnt start and i would have to play with that link to get it going.

Went to repco to buy some link wire and they had to order it in and you gad to buy it in metre lengths, so i got the circuit breakers. Had to modify the little box they go in a little bit but now its perfect.

i know SFA about the failures of the fusible links, but i do know that the brushes can wear out rather quickly, especially when you use a bit of current (spotties ect) and dirt in there will wear it out FAST.

illd pul it apart and check the brushes first myself, could be getting to the point of not reacing the commuttator.

yes i have 2 circuit breakers ready to go in. but not one for the dodgyest link. will a 100 amp fuseable link from supercheap be ok? ive had a look and there isnt much more than that amperage

First find out what the ratings of the factory ones. The fusable link /circuit breaker is supposed to blow before the cable melts.

I installed a 130amp alternator to my Liberty and had no end of problems with blowing fusable links when the 2nd battery was in need of a charge. I fitted another wire from alternator to battery (fused at 60 amp) and the problem has abated

i forgot to mention the circuit breaker...did it to the rex after having issues..never had them again.....had a 80amp circuit breaker..but used 4guage cables
