Question on fender mount antennas for CB and HAM

The mag mounts on the roof are taking a beating going in and out of the garage and since I'm bringing in the CB to get properly tuned, I figured this was as good a time as any to pickup new antennas and do a pair of fender mount installations.

Has anyone here gone that route and if so, did you find a bracket to fit or just mod one to make it fit?

Rigs include:

Yaesu 2800M

and Cobra 25NWST

Also, what brand of antenna are you running? Opinions on it?

Thanks,
Bill

GME make a really nice stainless Z bracket that fits subies perfectly.

they are about $12 each and really solid

really good antennas need a solid mounting,
eg i had one like http://cgi.ebay.com.au/UHF-477MHZ-RF470 ... dZViewItem

but was called cd9000 i think, worked awesome, but its big, and mounted to solid bull bar on Lseries.
I think those fender mounts are ugly, and doubt their robustness, but what other option is there? Still I am in the same quandary atm, now have OBW, and yeah I seen your pic of the light bar you made, wouldn't you try to mount antenna on that?

theres nothing wrong with a fender mount for a light antenna but you do see guys running massive solid glass antennas with a heavy duty spring base mounted to a Z bracket..... the Z bracket will give way long before the spring flexes

I have a RFI steel whip mounted on my Z bracket and its been there for years, copped alot of tree hits and hasnt budged. the GME bracket is alot heavier than other ones i have seen

Im a CB installer.

If it's a small sorta antenna the Stainless Steel GME bracket should be fine. Part number is MB407SS, However if the antenna has any weight to it at all then this bracket will feel flimsy. You will know what i mean when you do it.

There is an alternative... exact same shaped bracket but slightly thicker that will work very well. GME part number MB407, It's not stainless but i have not seen one rust. Perhaps it has a Zinc coating. We use these when a larger than 30cm antanna is fitted to the fender.

There is also a few different mounts that can actually mount to your bonnet, some adjustable, some not. Best bet is to pop into a CB radio store and take a look at what they have.
