hi all

i have a 1990 L-series wagon running a stock ea82 carby...

just wondering whether its worth getting a new coil for performance purposes?? i've got no idea how they work, and if different coils to different things!...

any help would be much appreciated.

nah, the oem one is very good....(esp for carby engine)

however check what the contact is like for the distributor to coil lead...
it can corrode.
and make sure its a snug/tight fit, anything less promotes sparking in the contact and corrosion.

some will say get a MSD Blaster type tho, and increase your spark gap....
but I'm skeptical for a carby......
with a turbo in boost, yeah more spark energy is really a good thing to get a combustion happening under pressure...then you may want to do the full thing with blaster coil + cdi. (applicable to ea82t type turbos, more modern engines like EJs don't use distributors)

You know what they say about spark?
Once the mixture is ignited no matter how small the spark, its job is over..
more spark energy is redundant

I found the blaster and larger gap did improve performance on the EA81 carby, particularly low end torque, the theory I believe is a larger spark exposes more fuel to the spark and gives a larger initial ignition instead if a longer chain reaction ignition.
