Stop Lamp Warning Lamp Control Unit

Post by maddog » Sat Sep 30, 2006 3:59 pm

Hi All - Does anyone know where the Stop Lamp Warning Lamp Control Unit lives?
(L Series Wagon 1987) The warning light comes on whenever you brake but both brake lights are working...??? My wiring diagram shows a S.L.W.L.C.U. but I have no idea where it is - and i reckon it's faulty! Any clues anyone?
Thanks in anticipation...

Thanks Matt - at least that narrows it down to somewhere in the spaghetti under the dash!

I heard this is a comon problem when the wrong globes are fitted in the tail lights mixed with the resistance of the old cabling in the car.

I can't say where an L series one is.... but in an MY wagon its in the (drivers side i think) rear quarter panel and on the MY sedans it's built into the (passanger side i think) tail light assembly.

I think Tim knows more about this.

There is a small circuit board mounted on the back of the drivers side rear light. im only guessing that it might be this.

Medal of Honour for Suparoo

Suparoo - You get the award for the most accurate information!!!!
You were 100% correct - board is attached to rear drivers light assembly. The only bugger is that you need to swap the wiring loom for the rear light assembly, the board is soldered in and I didn't want to risk wrecking the good unit!

Thank you Subaru Guru!!!

My appoligies Maddog, what i ment by in dash, was in the instrument cluster part, which was wrong anyway.

I don't think it would be the brake fluid....there is a separate warning light for that. Unless it's different in Touring wagons..?
My Tourer (and my old one) has a warning light for blown brake lights and another one for low fluid.

Sounds like Subarino is on the ball there - try changing the rear globes for a different brand or wattage.

and in Brumbys, there is some thing with a zillion wires mounted inside the cabin centrally behind the covers midway between back window and floor, from memory, i think this controls most dash warning lights

(Brake fluid level was at max)
I tried changing the globes first - easiest option - but this didn't make any difference. I swapped complete rear light wiring loom and this fixed it.
I then retested the original wiring loom and the fault reappeared.

I'd say it was the circuit board. QED.

Thanks to all for your input - it was fun!
