Hey all,

Was in pick'n'pay less today and picked up a headlight that takes a H4 globe. What is the highest globe wattage that the reflectors, or anything else for that matter, can handle before they start to melt? cheers,

Big Al

When you say headlight, you mean for an L series?

I thought all L series had H4 globe headlights?

I think the maximum was a 60/55W for those things. Although they did have glass, they also were made from plastic and probably wouldn't be the best candidate for a relay/wattage upgrade.

IMHO Best globes for your money:

avoid the ricey asian blue tinted ones. they'll cause you headaches (literally!)

I had 90/130's in my Rx at one stage. You'd best be doing the relay upgrade thing and sticking with the standard 60/55

The best upgrade for L series is to add a dual relay system to them and up the cable size feeding them power. Then as suggested go the temperature specific globes and stick with around standard power rated ones.

I am considering making one of these realy setups.

And if it was a sucess, i was thinking of making more and selling them.

ive got 90/100w ricey blue globes in my L-series, ive had them for 6months now and no problems have arised! Because theyre a very white/blue colour they arent as bright as normal 55/60w globes, but they look cool!

LOL looking cool isnt what seeing in the dark should be about.

Another good thing for the L series is to get hold of some Jap headlights as they dont have the shade above the globe and have a better refaction cut

Those blue/white globes are as effective as turning on a white fluro tube, they got no penetration. At least the human eye copes with the standard yellow colour globes, cos I cant see shit when riding in other peoples cars fitted with the blue/white ones.

Most headlights dont have very good reflectors in them, and burn the coating when running high wattage lamps.

Didnt know that about Jap import lamps.

I have sensative eyes and find the Blueish driving lights (5000k) better on the eyes

Me too. I'll probably get shot for this but this is the toyota I have. All of the spotties have blue filters on them.

I think the original post was refering to upgrading OEM headlights, and I dont think there would be any difference to the quality of light and beam spread by different filaments or wattage's. L-Series lamps are typical 80's design.

I upgraded my MY to H4 Narva inserts, whole new lamps - as good as any new car now, and with twin relay set up + spots.

Sometime (when I get round to it), I will add a twin headlight conversion to my L-series, and may use pre-focused lamps etc. I have a few ideas.

Just because you have 90/100w globes doesn't mean it'll run at that wattage! You'll need the twin relay and wiring upgrade before you can even run at that power!!

You haven't had problems yet, because you're still running 60/55w!

If you want to compare the difference between what the wiring should be in the L series and what it is compare the wiring to the Libertys headlight setup.

I wouldnt have the blue globes if i didnt have my driving lights, they put out plenty of light without being annoying to the car in front....

if its dark and i wanna see i just flick the switch and vwalla the 4 narva's come on and we have stacks of light!

Yes Wilbur has 4 lights on his rollbar of his tojo and he puts out a shit load from them. Are yours roof mounted?

nah, the round ones are bolted to the bumper, and the rectangular ones are on the roo-bar....

hint to people thinking about putting their spotties on the bumper next to the roo-bar...DONT DO IT....ive smashed too many spotties going through deep "ruts" and hitting the roo bar on the ground, then rebounding onto the spotties smashing them!
