Hey guys, I've wired a CD player in my Vortex but can't get it to work properly. There's only so many wires that can be hooked up, it works but only when the lights are on. I've tried changing the wires but can't seem to figure it out.

did the CD player (so old school :) ) come with destructions ?

and did you test each wires out put from the car ?
Work only when car lights are on sounds suss ... even though you swapped.

Old school used to be a constant POS+ 12V to feed the clock memory and IGN POS+ 12V to main power up of unit

but, somewhere along the way it changed to main bigger fuse power to unit to BATT + Pos all the time and ign or acc actually switched it on or off, and you have an option to turn some on for set time without IGN or acc - keys in ign at all

Check Wiring ...

What sort ( Brand ) of CD Player ? Have you got wiring diagrams ?

Most CD players have two power sources - one for 'sleep' mode other for 'running' mode, first is a constant 12 V to keep internal clock going basically, the other usually runs of 'accessories' when ignition is turned on.

You may have to add a new power source & run it from a relay, getting the required voltage draw to operate correctly.

Cheers, Bantum ...

Haven't got a tester to test the wires but there is only a few it can be, I've tried them all. It's a kenwood. It came with the wiring diagram. I'll keep fiddling about with it.

$40 odd spent at jaycar on a cheap digital multimeter is money well spent ;) Or even cheaper the test probe with an earth clip at one end, probe at the other and a 12v light bulb in the middle. So you can see which wire gets power and when. If your CD player is coming on with the lights I would think you have the main power for the unit hooked up to the instrument illumination wire.

If you are putting the CD player where the old radio lived everything is there, permanent power, ignition power and the electric antenna as well. The only problem you will have is with the speaker set up as the radio used a common earth for the speakers.

The Vortex FSM in the downloads section has the wiring diagram for the radio in section 6
