Hey guys, my mate has a 2000 Impreza and he was changing the battery and he hit something with the lead and arced it out. Now it won't start, all the engine lights come on like they should but it won't fire. Need help quick as he needs his car for work.

Check the fuses and fusable links under the bonnet. As well check the fuses under the dash in the car on the drivers side.
Can you short the starter with a screwdriver to see if it cranks? As well check the wires that run to the starter teminal one may be cooked.
If the car has an imobilser in may be toasted.

Also do the battery dance: disconnect the battery (negative terminal!), wait 30 minutes (so they say) then reconnect the battery and see what happens.
The ECU may have gone into a safe mode, or you've blown a fuse.
What did it arc out on?
Cheers

I'm not sure what he arced it out on but he said there were a lot of sparks! Turns out the starter got toasted.

starter motor ? If you read your post Canny - you said it would not fire. This made me think your mate could turn it over ie starter motor working just fine, just would not start. Guess your mate described it to you wrong....

Yes he did. When I asked him if it was turning over he said yes, but when I was talking to him later and he told me it was the starter, he said it was only making a clicking noise when he tried to start it. He doesn't know anything about cars.
