check your alternator for too many Volts ?

Thought I'd better follow up and check the alternator I dredged up to fit to my EA82M (M is for Mongrel)

Fuji me ! Starts at 14.1 Volts and as the revs build up - nowhere near my 6000 redline it went to 17, 18 Volts.

Seen this before with a flat battery in the multimeter, so used another, got same result. Checked another car with both DMM's and got normal result.

Swapped in another to save a fry up. need to research external voltage regulator. Jaycar used to do kits for smoother output ....

No hurt to check eh ? It's not just low output that can screw a good day !!

Snap up a couple of these, I bought some about 6 months ago and they let you know how you're charging when driving and what's in the battery with just accessories on.

You can pick up 5 delivered for less than $15.

I have one of these too. I use it to watch the battery drop on my camper trailer. Works well in the car when not on the trailer.

I'd say reg is shot too :)

$2.95 is affordable permanent fixture, ta for the link

OK. What is it about accurate Volts checker needing another separate power source ?

My GLTA has a Volt monitor that I switch between battery and knock sensor - it needs its own power supply for reasons of accuracy especially when monitoring the 1.7 to 4.5 V of the knock circuit. I run a SLA in the glovebox for it

I haven't fitted them yet but I also bought some of the flat square hard wired ones so I can see what my 330w solar panels on the Transit are chucking out and what's in my 320ah working batteries at a glance as the regulator is in a cupboard. They seem to top up to 13.1 even though I'm punching 14.7 into them most of the day.

They were even cheaper I think so one under the bonnet too.

Or nightshift at a multinational company that doesn't know about a night shift ......only the locals did
