Hand Held Radio

Post by rubisubi » Mon Mar 10, 2014 11:10 am

Hey guys, my birthday is coming up and no doubt the old chook is gonna throw some cash my way so what better way to spend it than on more toys. Anyone recommend a good hand held which they use on trips. I've been told that 5W is the way to go but all research so far has shown that they only come with the built in rechargeable battery. I was hoping for a unit with rechargeable AA batteries, that way you can always carry spares. The built in ones like all devices seem to die or fail to hold charge over time so I'm reluctant to go down that path. Any recommendations or brands to stay clear of? So far the front runners are Oricom and GME.

I belive the Oricom is a better brand but the GME does come with more water proof options.

Mate not sure how much you are spending but I bought the Uniden Tradies Pack. Come with 2 hand held 80 channel UHF's with rechargeable nicad batteries, 2x Car Chargers, 2x external microphones and 2x Belt Clips. I think I paid about $250.00 and picked them up at Harvey Norman. They are only 1w but I have had not problems with mine.

Cheers for the heads up, how do you find the battery life?

From personal experience on several radios, Uniden are, um, to be nice, slightly lacking, GME seem to be the best for everything.
Sorry, just an opinion from comparing them to other sets on trips.
L serious, still.
