EJ alt - wiring into EA

Post by Ben » Tue Oct 04, 2005 9:09 pm

Smoke is coming off the fusible link between the alt and the batt, figuring I have done something wrong......

No problems until the car starts though....

Any thoughts?

Main white wire goes to fusible link
EJ B wire goes to L WR wire
EJ LR wire goes to L B wire

Thats the best I could figure out from the FSM's.....

In the L FSM the WR wire goes to the fuses box and then to the meter
In the Impreza FSM the BW wire goes to the fuse box and then the meter.

In the L FSM the BW wire goes to the fusible link
In the Impreza FSM the LR wire goes to the fuse box and then battery

So I hooked the L WR wire to the I BW wire
and the L BW wire to the I LR wire, figuring I would be right....

Would this be part of the problem?

Huge battery and a big alternator.....how many amps were going through the link? Was the battery down a bit?

I melted my links when charging a flat battery, they don't like 70 amps going through them.

Thank God the forum is back.

Could be a possibility, I haven't charged the battery in a while....

Might leave it on over the weekend and see how it goes on Monday afternoon....

Well whaddya know!!!

Will stick the big sucka on the charger I guess :)

Although the sight of smoke eminating from anything electrical is really disturbing it's good to hear you figured out that you figured it out right in the first place. Nice work :)

It's a 520, dunno how to get any bigger in there, as it is now it would go close to hitting the bonnet if you sat on the bonnet....

You'll need a 100A fuse link between the Imp alt and the battery, the L link will be a lot lower than that because it is only a 60A max alt. If you still have the Imp engine fuse box flip it open and you'll see the whopping big bolt down 100 amper in there. The spade end link in an early Lib or Imp would prolly fit and be sufficient though.

Thanks Al, the impreza harness had a big 80A bolt down fuse, I'll get that out and use it.

Ahh cool, must be the libs that have a 100a in them for the extra electrical loads.
