Where is the information source for an L Series tach?

I want to install an aftermarket tach to my L Series.
My tach says I need to connect it to a particular place, as a source for RPM readout.
-Tach sensor port?
- vacuum system?
- charging system?
What is "4-mil" wire btw.
Is it short for 4mm or "4-MIL (spec)?
(MIL spec is US military specification, i think)
I'd love to find out where my EA82 is idling at,
as if varies depending on engine temperature,
and I'd also like to see what RPM it detonates at on 91 and 95 octane fuel.
I think with my current state of tune, 98 octane may be overkill,
as I suspect it's slower now before 4500rpm.

one side or the other of your coil is where you have to go for an electrical tacho

4mil wire is actually wire that has a cross sectional area of 4 square millimeters, overkill for running a tacho. 0.5mm wire would suffice.

Go a tacho dash conversion - USMB has the instructions somewhere.

But I already bought a tach... though it was a bargain.
I was thinking of installing it on the steering column,
which means I would have to cut some of the original dash to make it fit.
I have already measured it up, my tach will not block the 4wd and turn indicators
and only obstruct the speedo beyond 140km/h.
My speedo goes to 200km/h or higher... why, I have no clue; I don't think the EA82 would make it.

the tach sense wire needs to go to the negative side of the coil.
if you have a later model l series theres a tach signal wire that goes to a black box on the right hand A pillar right up under the dash it should be yellow on a 6 pin connector and if you unplug it the fuel pump stops working.

+1 on the negative side of the coil. There should be 4 wires; illumination (ive had white before), ground (black), power (red), signal (green?)
Post a pic
I had this little tacho on mine for awhile which wasnt too in your face.. just never got around to painting the surround.
