Has anyone had any experience with these scan-tools on a subaru, what brand did you use and what sensors were you able to access. I am looking at getting one for two reasons. Im looking at one from
http://www.autoenginuity.com any recomendations?
1. I want to be able to diagnose why my car runs much much better after reseting the ECU and then performance slowly fades (boost is reduced and second turbo comes on later).
2. I want a PC in my car to be able to display a virtual dash and i would like to have a boost guage/ temp/ oil press etc guages on it.

In the initial stages of car-pc design myself. I have no experience with OBDII interfacing yet. There is this one:
http://www.carplugs.com/obd2scanner.html which looks similar to the Autoenginuity one, but is a little cheaper.
There is also this:
http://www.planetfall.com/~jeff/obdii/
http://www.opendiag.org/
Which contains around 10 dollars worth of parts (apart from the cable), but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to adapt the software for subaru use, or whether it will work at all.
Edit: and there's this:
http://www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM327QS.pdf
which may be the way to go if you can build it yourself, and if the chip is affordable in single quantities.
Further edit: It's 32.50 Canadian from the manufacturer , so quite affordable.

Another edit :
http://freediag.sourceforge.net/ has open source vehicle diagnostic software.

I've been working on an ECU reader as well. I've got it talking to the computer, but the software needs finishing. It uses an AVR micro. I can post it up if anyone is interrested.

I have been selling cables to work with the select monitor ports on the earlier ECUs
