3spd Gearbox wiring auto to manual converstion

Post by Smokey » Mon May 23, 2011 1:08 pm

Hey Guys,

86 S1 L touring wagon auto 3pd body, conversion to 5spd dual range.

Need some help wiring up the reverse lights and dash light on the manual gearbox. I did a auto to manual conversion some time ago but have been driving it with the tbar selector in the Park position.

I understand the looping of the fat black wires w white stripe to allow the car to start. Just not sure what to do with the associated reverse lights wires.

below is a pic of the Tbar selector

Reverse bridges the following:

Green yellow stripe (12V live w ignition on)
Red blue stripe (power out to relay)
Brown (12V live dash gear lights up when manual gbox signal is linked to this) (second gbox wire grounded)
Black (ground) (solid rail on underside of the plastic, wire joins rail between red and brown)

P.s looking for a manual S1 cluster centre. I have a S2 to swap.

I have also identified all the other wires at gbox and Tbar selector if anyone needs any help.

Resolved:

Found a post a few years back from wagonist that made sense once I was stuck.

Both of these are accessable around the gearstick.

For the neutral safety switch, there will be 2 thicker wires, one is black with white strip, the other is black with yellow stripe. Simply hook these together permanently.

For the reverse light wires, I think they are both green with stripes (can't remember what colour).
Using a multimeter or test light, find which wire has +12V when the ignition is on, this will be the power for the lights.
To find the wire to the reverse lights, get a piece of wire and then start bridging the power wire over until you find the one that turns on the reverse lights.

The easiest way is to then extend these wires through to the engine bay to the gearbox. I have seen it done where the wires went down through the fllor & wre then cable tied (within a shield) to the handbrake cable to keep them from getting caught up in the shifter mechanism & driveshafts.

Just hook each of these wires to each side of the reverse switch on the manual gearbox.
