I recently took apart and painted my alternator on my L series wagon and put back in connected it up and then when i put the battery on the fusible link got red hot and did its job before i disconnected the power again.

After some thought i got it down to a little black insulator that goes on before the nut on the thread called BATT to stop it short circuiting through the cage of the alternator..

Hopefully this saves some people some grief and fusible links later on..

I'll find out later if i have stuffed my alternator i guess..

Good point Wagonman but you have got to wonder why a manufacture put this stuff on it the first place.. everything is there for a reason so whenever rebuilding/repairing it.. make sure you don't end up with any leftovers
