Try putting a set of H4's in.

Like Rick said, buy a quality set of headlight inserts and H4 100/75 bulbs.
To get the most out of them, wire in another relay to give them full power and take the load out of the switch.

Use a set of these... http://www.4h.com.au/prod753.htm

or for the twin headlight setup use... http://www.4h.com.au/prod365.htm

And like the others have mentioned.. make up some new 4mm wiring with fuses to get the most out of the light. I would however recommend you only use 55/100w H4 globes for street use. You can use the higher for offroad but if you get pulled over for using them on the highway, you'll be hit with a nice fine.

Did I read somewhere else that there is some headlights that are sealed that you have to replace the whole light assembly? I recall reading that Tarago light fits - is that correct?

I think you can use the import Tarago headlights in the twin (1A) headlight model. I've just recently fitted some from an import L300 Delica (H4 replacement) but needed to redo the wiring because the pin-out config was different. I'm pretty sure there are other cars out there that use the single (2BX) headlight wth H4 replacement (I'm thinking Hilux?)

They are a standard size so if you have a look at some of the hiluxs they will be the same size or tons of different cars that use them even my old chrysler LeBaron, You have the large rectangles for the single headlight and the small rectangles for the dual rectangles. I had Cibie high beams till I broke one but you can get the sealed ones for cheap which last longer or the ones with replaceable bulbs (About $30)! I also recommend the relay installation but just replacing the headlights will double your light output!

92 targa brumby (weekend runabout),
97 Lifted Outback (Dailey drive),
05 outback safety (Too cheap to pass up),
90 model liberty (was to be scrapped instead sold to workmate)
+ others.

post hijack!!

ive seen and read over and over again the relay mod but it really doesnt make sense to me, overly complicated ie putting a resistor across a relay (wtf)

have you done it, and did you follow the exact article??

The headlight relay mod is to eliminate the voltage drop associated with crusty old cheap Subaru wiring, relays and switches. Just checked my car with the engine off - headlights get 7.6V through the orig wiring, while the driving lights get 9.23V from a good aftermarket relay and the shortest possible wiring lengths. So I should redo my headlight wiring too.

Putting a resistor (or a diode) across a relay coil is meant to sink the transient back voltage that occurs as the relay coil is switched off. It's a good idea for relays switched by ICs (like an ECU-switched fuel pump relay), but a waste of time for a simple circuit like headlights.

Highly recommend the light upgrade, I did it on my wagon and made a huge difference. I also re wired them with new relays. I didn't actually have a wiring diagram to follow and came across a problem. After flicking the high beams on and then flicking them off, they would actually stay on. With the help of Subarino I put a resister on the relay and it solved the problem.

Doesn't seem too pricey from what I've found lately. Can't tell what the difference between them is though.

im goign to put HID in my honda and maybe in the subaru if i can be bothered but i plan to do the new wiring first on the suby, but i ll be doing it a bit differently ie not putting the resistor on the relay.
just not my cup of tea and my mate doesnt recomend it and i hold him in pretty high regard

I'm sure there was another weird reason for the resistor. Like the high beam warning light not turning off or something. Can't remember where I read it.
