I need to replace the coil in the 1982 MY EA81 engine.
It has a ballast resistor, and I am running Shell V Power fuel (98 oct) with 12 deg timing. What is the best alternative for a new coil and from where to get one in NSW.

Ballast resistor - does that mean you also run points in dizzy?
Points or ignition module appears to be the decider in what type of coil you should use, there is the Bosch GT40 or the GT40R depending on dizzy

Yep
Still running points and condenser.
Guess I wouldn't mind an electronic dizzy but would need to know exact unit to be installed with minimal work. the car is a daily driver so cant be off the road for long. I have the know how to do the work just not a lot of time.
I think from memory I am already running a GT40R coil just wondered if there was a better alternative. The coils high tension lead has corroded inside the coil so I thought I would check on the latest options to replace the coil. Still would be interested in an electronic dizzy if there was info on were to get one, from what model/year of Subaru and wiring mods etc. If the mechanics (dizzy gearing) in the electronic unit was the same as the points dizzy then the electrics would not be too hard.
Got to admit it is getting harder to get a hold of the points dizzy vacuum advance units when they go. I think I am on points dizzy number 3 and vacuum advance pod number 4 or 5. As they are all 2nd hand they don't last long.

My 84 came with electronic dizy when I got it in 98. They are just a straight swap in with change of coil and eliminate ballast resistor I think. The vac advance units may still be new from Subaru. I got the vac adv / boost retard for mine a year or so ago. $200 +++
