hey all, first time poster and i dont know subaru's to well as this is my first.
my brother is giving me his subaru liberty and i am going to drive it back to sydney from albury(the border of nsw and vic) and i dont feel like riding the accelrator all the way, as it is a LX it doesnt have all the sipfey feautures such as cruise control, ive been looking at after market units and it seems easy enough to install, i want to know a few things, firstly, would it be possible to take one off a GX from the wreckers and install it on mine, and how easy would it be compared to installing an aftermarket one and what would the cost be, thanks again. i would appreciate any help i could get.

There is one thing I am not too sure if its there is the wire loom for cruise control, but apart from that is the actuator, buttons etc etc, if its manual you will need something there for the clutch pedal to cut cruise control, I dunno, cruise control uses the speedo in the dash, where about after market ones uses magnet with a sensor on the drive shaft/train.

If someone here or RSLC can tell you about the wiring issues that would be good - cant help because I havent done that kind of thing before.

Edit: for some reason in my mind.. there is electrical connectors ready to go in your LX... for Cruise Control, if you have same year you should be able to change it over from GX?

jst a heads up for anyone looking to install a stock standard cruise control from a LX to a GX, the wiring loom is built into the cruise control and are built into the computerand are not transferable!! i tried this and a new loom costs $2000+.

Nah I reckon he means $2000 - the cost of the loom and fitment.

I'd go the after market unit but instead of using magnets and a sensor, tap into the speed sensor wire as this should be an ideal reference for the AftMkt cruise. Plus it should be a lot cheaper, somewhere near the $200 mark as OB has asked above (fitment might cost more).

Might been easier option - less mucking around and just install the aftermarket CC kit in. As Ive seen after market CC going around $200 approx, maybe cheaper...

Sorry to dig up an old thread but i was wondering if this is also the same for 1995 models? I have both LX and GX but the GX is written off so it's my donor car.

So far i have transplanted Power windows and Central locking, that was straight forward as in just swapping the wiring looms, window regulator/motor, Central locking latch insides each door and the regulator & relay under the dash for power windows.

Anyway would be nice to know if this is possible without wrecking something expensive

Cheers.

If your LX & GX are both 95 models, then strip everything out of the GX, complete wiring loom included, and swap it all over.
Subaru (like all Jap makers) were in a rut during the 90s, so they started going to the effort of making different looms (therefore with different amounts of copper wiring) for the different models & markets to save money.
eg, I've replaced a carb L series 88 touring wagon loom with one from an 89 DL wagon, but the 91 DL wagon loom is missing wiring.

A loom swap would probably be easiest IMO. Or study some wiring diagrams to see if it's linked into the ECU.

Also check to see that it's not a stand alone loom like the power windows/central locking is (in the L series anyway).
