My outback has a towbar, but i cant find a trailer wiring socket (the 7 pin flat type)

Assuming that the previous owner didnt have one, or he removed it before selling it, i bought a length of 7 core cable and a 7 pin socket.

What to i connect it to? Is there a special plug designed for connecting the trailer harness to?

Cheers

Have a look in the rear boot well, or any rear cargo compartments. I can't recall from memory if the 2001 outback had any or not. Most factory installed trailer sockets are now being installed so that the plug can be tucked away inside the vehicle.

There's a connector for it behind the passenger side tail light, everything you need all in one place, I wired mine myself but don't remember the pin arrangement, sorry it's been a while.

Thanks Jordan

So is that the white, 10 pin plug?

Did you cut your plug off, or did you find a socket that matches it?

The (few) Outbacks I've looked at have had the trailer wiring tucked into the pocket on the left of the boot with the jack. Sometimes it falls deep into that pocket.

10 pins sounds about right, I didn't cut the plug off as I don't like making changes that can't be undone, I just tinned the end of the wires, inserted them into the plug and taped it up when I was done.

I conveniently had a removable light board from a boat trailer handy when I did mine, between that and the trusty multimeter it was done in no time.

Ok ive done it.

I ended cutting off the plug and soldering/ heatshrinking the connections cos i needed to tow the trailer today and couldnt wait till next week to buy a matching plug.

The wire colours are as follows

Car wiring ----- Function ----- Trailer wiring ---- 7 Pin Flat plug No.
Black-----------Earth-----------White--------------3
Blue/Red-------12v Aux----------Black--------------2
White/Black----Stop Lights--------Red--------------6
Lt Green/Black--Turn Right--------Green------------4
Black/Blue------Tail Lights--------Brown------------7
Black/Green----Turn Left---------Yellow------------1
no wire--------Trailer Brakes-------Blue------------5

This is of the soldered connections with heatshrink over them (i still have 1 to go)

This is after i wrapped it all up in insulation tape, ready to push back into the compartment.

The blue wire with the connector on it is for if i ever get electric trailer brakes
