EJ into L series, some wiring questions

G'day all!
As you probabily already know, I'm in the throws of my EJ conversion. Yesterday my cut down loom proved to be a goer on the shed floor when the EJ22 was fired up without a problem for the first time
What I need to know now is the following:
- The alternator, how do I wire this in? There are 4 wires on the round orange/red plug, the L had a grand total of 3 plugs.
- I have one ECU wire that needs to reference/go to the "C" terminal of the alternator - run a wire to the alternator for this and which is the "C" terminal?
- The back up power wire for the ECU, do I wire this in with the main power wire or get the power from somewhere else?
- I have two wires that come from the ECU, went to a black connector under the dash. One is green, the other is white (can't remember the line colours on them) - any idea what these are? I suspect one is an oil light, the other I dunno...
- What sort of fusing should I use between the EJ wiring harness and the EA wiring loom, if any?
and - Crimp or soldier the wiring loom and harness together?
If you know any of these answers please share your knowledge (much appreciated), I now want to get this right so I don't have any issues once its in the L...
Please no thread whoring/questions from others of their EJ conversions, I want to keep this thread clean and on-topic.
Cheers

here's a little how to for alt wiring
showthread.php?t=4260
I used a big blade fuse, comes in holder with wires hanging out, soldered in.All the other wires i joined like subaru with little brass crimp connectors, you would of seen these when stripping the loom.I think i made them from tiny brass connectors you get from dick smith as couldn't find anywhere to purchase ones like subaru.

Thanks Stamp Licker! The big blade fuse you're talking about I'm thinking is one of those red ones that takes a standard fuse, a 15 amp fuse should do right?
I also checked out the two wires that I couldn't remember the colours - green with a white stripe and a silver dot, the other one is white with a green stripe and a silver dot. Very discriptive I know but that's all I can tell you for now. I'll try and work out the pinout of each on the weekend if no-one has a suggestion before hand.
I'll be raiding my local jaycar store for some bits and pieces for the job

Another question:
I'm looking at installing an immobiliser... For one of the 3 immobiliser 'tricks' is it ok to cut the main power to the ECU? Would this reset the ECU every time I locked my car?
Thanks for any input on this one!

It would reset it overnight yeah - this is the lazy way to reset your ecu, take the battery terminals off overnight.
No real biggy I guess but might make it difficult to diagnose fault codes in the future, and it might run abit funny in the mornings.

Thanks AT - I reckon I'll 'hit up' some other wires then.

The alternator, how do I wire this in? There are 4 wires on the round orange/red plug, the L had a grand total of 3 plugs.
See attached diagram. The diode you can get from the passenger side of the harness near the cruise control unit.
- I have one ECU wire that needs to reference/go to the "C" terminal of the alternator - run a wire to the alternator for this and which is the "C" terminal?
If you look on the alternator you will see a little sticker with S, Ign, L. Again, refer to the diagram.
- The back up power wire for the ECU, do I wire this in with the main power wire or get the power from somewhere else?
You can wire it in with the main power.
- I have two wires that come from the ECU, went to a black connector under the dash. One is green, the other is white (can't remember the line colours on them) - any idea what these are? I suspect one is an oil light, the other I dunno...
Sure they are coming from the ecu? They sound like the oil and temp sender wires. Should be green with a white trace (oil) and white with a green trace (water). Keep them in the engine bay and run them around with the Air flow wires. Then simply join them in to the existing oil/water wires from your original harness.

Thanks OB! I forgot to post about the wires, Alpine Raven came over and we discovered both were water temp guages - one under the intake manifold where the water channel passes under there and one on top of the block near the crank angle sensor. The white one is independant of the ECU, the green one goes to the ECU and a black plug that has a lot of ECU wires in there, I presume this is a diagnostics plug. Both wires went upto a dash plug. I'll probabily just tap the temp wiring into the existing loom under the dash and wrap up the factory L wiring under the bonnet out of the way neatly.
Also, both of those wires that I reckon are temp wires worked on the temp guage, showing the same temp level... I haven't looked closely for the oil warning light as I've been way from the wiring - and I don't know where the sensor/switch is on the block to check the wire colour... unless subaru have somehow used a temp sensor as the oil warning light switch...
I'll have a look for the diode that you've shown in the diagram (thanks again for that - I like the "jester" font

), if I can't find it i'll probabily look at getting another from Jaycar or the like.

The one on the block near the crank sensor (under the alternator) is your oil guage. It is not temp. The temp ones are behind the manifold on the water cross over pipe. The single wire is the sender unit and the 2 wire plug is the temp sensor for the ecu.
Green with white trace is oil
White with green trace is water.

Ah, righto, that solves that then! Thanks again OB. I'll let you know how it goes once its in (but as you know with me, don't hold your breath!). With everything thats going on I'm hoping for the end of july to have it in and running... Or before we head to the snow at the very very latest!

Ahhh!!!!
Problem solved Bennie! Derr me..

Another quick question:
Can any one tell me which pin or colour coded wire/pin out (on the L series 4 plug ECU) is the one for the speed sensor?
I thought this would be labelled on the back of the instrument cluster with some abbreviation, but I've found nothing. My manual shows nothing either - nor did the L series factory manual I borrowed from AP.

Unless you are wanting to run the factory cruise unit you don't need it.

Thanks OB. Does that mean there is no reid switch for the speed sensor in the L dash? I remember a debate about it a long time ago. Might do a search for it and see what the consesus is.

Okay, this is what I've found from my search -
wagonist wrote:A lot of the one's I've seen have the part in the sppedo, & have the track on the board, but not the screw that joins the 2 together (this is on the clusters with tachos, I can't comment about the non tacho ones).
There are 2 holes in the circuit board between the speedo & the central display.
One of them is for the JDM 100km/h chime & is labelled "100k", the other is for the speed sensor (I think its labelled with a zigzag line)
^ this post is most interesting which came from this
colourful at times thread
If I can work it out I'll hook it up as I'd rather have it sorted than not.

From memory one screw terminal is silver / chrome and is part of the PC board, whereas the other contact may have been a brass screw at the back of the speedo head square white plastic bit. Was not too hard to identify just poking around in my own time. Never hooked up , just curious at the time

I've found the wire, as I think Captain Obvious says in the linked thread - its a yellow wire with a red stripe and a single gold dot. I have photos of my instrument cluster apart tracing the wiring on the board that mounts to the back of the instrument cluster but I haven't uploaded them and I don't have my camera with me to do it. The zigzag labelled wiring wasn't the speed sensor on my insturment cluster...

Okay - latest question: The wire for the AC/Fan relay - is this to turn the thermo fans on when the motor is up on the temp or the AC is turned on?
I'm thinking it might be worth the ECU triggering the fans rather than the thermo switch in the side of the radiator. I've found and labelled the wire during the strip down of the Liberty wiring, I now need to know if my thoughts on this wire are correct.
OB: She's going, or was before I took her off the road to finish off the job - no problems other than a water leak in the dodgy (now replaced) water pump. I then realised that I had not connected the speed sensor wire, but I will do this while I have the dash out again...
Cheers
