Have an intermittent fault fuel gauge gen 1 Liberty.
Gauge will fall to empty then slowly return to correct fuel level.
Fuel sender unit tests ok.
Common fault?
Do I have to pull out the cluster?

You may have to get the senders out again and clean them with a bit of thinners that generally fixes the problem.

I have the same problem with the sender on my L Series.
Anyone know where abouts its located on the wagon models.
I know for most sedans its under the rear seat but obviously the wagons fuel tank is down the end of the car.

lift the carpet in the back and you will see a plate that can be removed (couple screws), it is located straight under there.

i have a similair problem in my lib,if i fill it up its goes to Full but as i am driving, Say 150km's down the track it is very close to 1/4 of a tank mark, or empty. What i do though is i look at how many km's i have done. The fuel light seems to come on though!

if you want expensive option - buy new sender units will set you back approx $475 for AWD models. You can clean them but won't last long...
Most people here just rely on resetting ODO after filling up and drive until the light comes on and work out average kms before you need to refill.. for example - my Liberty's light comes on approx 550 - 575kms which means I have approx 80- 100kms left of fuel..

hi,
i was wondering if anyone knew why the fuel gauge would stop working in a L series wagon after pulling the instument cluster out, then reinstalling it. I am sure i have it back in the exact way it came out, and everything else seems to be working fine (ie speedo, temp etc). as soon as i had it all hooked up again, i turned on the ignition and the fuel gauge needle slowly dropped from full to way below empty, and wont move back. have cleaned and checked all contacts. could this be a sender problem?
any ideas???
cheers

On the series 1 lib you have two fuel sender units too loook at one for the left tank and one for the right also I used an eraser to clean off my senders then hit them with thinners but my fuel light doesn't work so I knew it was empty when it would die on corners!
