L Series A/C Problems

Hi Guys.

I have a 90 L series (EA82).

I was given the car by my cousin a couple of years ago and never really bothered trying out the A/C until the heatwave in the last month or so.

I was sitting at 60km/h on a flat road sitting at about 2500RPM and I decided that it was too damn hot just to have the window down so I turned the A/C on suddenly all the cars power was gone. The engine was stuttering off the traffic lights and when sitting at 60 my revs had gone up to about 3400RPM.

The aircon itself seems to be working quite well but I have to commute up the freeway for work and with the aircon on I dont have enough power to even get up to 80KM/H. I know the EA82 is not the most powerful engine but surely it shouldnt be that bad.

Anyone know what could be causing this and whats the best method to go about fixing it.

One of my friends thinks the compressor might be gone which will be a pain due to the amount it costs to get replaced (if thats the case I will just deal with the heat)

(P.S even with the aircon off I find it hard to get to 110KM/H on the freeway is this just the EA82's lack of power or I have heard it might be a fuel blockage/Carby problem anyone got any ideas?)
