Hi guys,
Can I hack into the cam sensor or the crank sensor and use it as a square wave generator in lue (lew.. liew.. loo ?) of the speed sensor. I will be running the EJ22 on an engine stand but need to give the ECU something to keep it happy. Will I need to amplify it? and what is a good voltage to send to the ECU..... 3v to 5v for example?

What I believe and read on other forums, it seems that the VSS needs to be hooked up, if you dont the computer gets confused and will drop into LIMP mode. I have seen a pemanent magnet wheel setup set up in a EJ22 to VW conversion web page, and I found the GM Delco ECU's that can be hacked with Calmaker software will accept a signal from an inline speedo cable drive device. Maybe this device is suitable if it gives the right signal.
If you want these links I will post them, as I am interested to know myself what others have done or think. Most dont seem to do anything, but as I have read it is advised to hook it up to unlock the most out of your engine.

I have never heard of any ill effects by not hooking up this wire. However i do believe the main function of this wire is a speed reducer and wont let your car travel over a certain speed. This speed obviously depends on the set up creating the signal into this wire.
For me i have wired into my speed sensor for my cruise control... this consists of a magnetic pick up and 2 small magets straped onto one of the CV joints. This stops the code and stops me from going over 138km/hr.
Other than that i noticed no difference in the running of the vehicle at all.
If this wire infact regulates your max speed then hooking it to your sensors on your motor may act as a rev limiter at hight RPM's.

i have seen on the usmb that the speed sensor on the spfi ecu for the l series increases the idle when the car is moving to decrease clutch stress, or something like that
