"L" Series Starting Issues

Recently when turning the key to start my "L" series there is a delay before the starter engages, this delay seems to be up to several seconds. Has anyone else experienced this and knows where I should look to fix the problem?

Might sound silly but have you checked the condition of the battery, wiring/cabling, starter etc..? Could be as simple as tightening a connection, Had a similar problem myself but turned out to be the dinky k-mart battery that came with the wagon at sale. Failing that there are hundreds of posts/threads on here that help.

Immobilizer in an L series, would have to aftermarket.

Could be a sticky started solenoid

Well the car does not have an immobiliser fitted:rolleyes:. An immobiliser would not cause a delay it would just not start at all. It looks like it was a fusible link problem. One of the connectors had a fair amount of corrosion on it. This created high resistance in the electrical circuit. It all came to a head late Saturday afternoon, when the car electrical system failed completely, no dash lights, interior lights etc. The RAA came out to have a look, and the guy found what he suspects is the fault. Only took him twen minutes to turn up on a 39 deg day.

Good to hear it was not something serious, gee sounds like i should join your raa? I know i'm in the wrong state but if the service is that quick!

and an immobiliser can and will delay the starter if theres something wrong with it..its happened to me personally;:

I'm with RACV - got the "total care" package. I'm very happy with the package, got it 2 weeks before going to perth. On the trip home it paid for itself - the car blew the radiator, it was going to be 4 days til parts would be available (and i didn't want them anyway, not enough funds - RACV person i was dealing with was very understanding). So RACV spoke to RAA and sorted out transport for the car from tintinara SA to Cobaw Vic (namely my pero's driveway) with us in the transport truck and overnight accommodation before the tow to vic.

The $170 i paid for it was well worth the money. As of now, i've still got 9 months left on it

PS I've also had a fuseable link die when driving home in the dark, everything became really dim, I thought the battery was dying. when we found out it was a FL, it was white in colour (shoulda been black) and instantly turned to ash when you tried to touch it... New link and all was good
