Best ECU for theoretical project?

Post by tim_81coupe » Sun Oct 08, 2006 3:48 pm

Hi,
Just tossing up some ideas with a mate as to what I'm doing with my EJ16 (the sedan is going EA again). This might not ever happen, but nonetheless I'm going to put it out there.

In one part of my garage I have an EJ16. In another part I have a VF10.

Now being serious, I think I'd only be going for about 5psi or so, but I don't think the factory two plug ECU would appreciate extra air. I've looked at Wolf and Megasquirt, with the latter of the two being seemingly more attractive due to the lower initial cost.

Has anyone here boosted an NA EJ? Is it worth it?

Oh and for the record, this is for a beach buggy.

If I remember correctly Tim's EJ16 is fully electronic.

I have seen "bolt on" kits for the EJ series motors to add turbo and/or super chargers to stock motors.

They're bolt on in the sense that they come with everything required to fit your choice of forced induction, from memory they run them at about 5-7psi and assure you that the motor can handle it no worries.

Unfortunately I can't find the link and can't remember if they ran them with after market or stock ECU's

I'll try to find it tomorrow for you, not making any promises though.

Cheers Baron, it is fully electronic, like an EJ22 it has the coil packs on the manifold.

I think the supercharging mob use either an ECUTek flash or a piggyback ECU.

Megasquirt does have an add-on controller for ignition, was thinking of changing to 4 bosch coils ala EJ20G, although the controller can handle the current setup I think.

I think I need to read into all the options a bit more. Thanks guys!

Sorry Tim, I've spent a couple of hours searching but had no luck, I think personally I'd start with the stock ECU and grab one of the Jaycar AFR kits to see how well it handles it, I imagine it'll lean out as I'm sure you're guessing the same, but I've seen people adapt the Camira ecu's to larger engines just be using larger injectors and throttle bodies, it might work as simply as this or maybe not.
