L series power mirror switch

Post by ajames » Sat May 25, 2013 5:15 pm

I have mirrors which I assume are powered (they don't have toggles to adjust them manually) but the switch wasn't there. I got one from the wreckers and connected it to the plug but it doesn't work.
The only difference is that the switch doesn't have 2 wires that the plug has.
Does anyone know why the plug has 2 additional wires and the mirrors won't 'power'?

Some L's did not have power mirrors.
Make sure there are wires coming from the mirror, where it mounts.
L serious, still.

:)

shees, i could have been tricked like that too :D

Not had a toggle on any L Series that was non power mirrors, more digital adjust fromoutside.

At lewast you can now brag about having power mitrrors .....:?: but what's this plug you connected ? If you have a fuse for power mirrors ? I have a few switches... how many wires does yours have ? just in case you really do have power moirrors ....

Generally there's a plug in the dash that the mirror controller will plug into, but as you said the wires don't correspond.
Is it a different colour plug?, as most of the L series dash loom plugs are colour matched.
L serious, still.

No toggles for manual mirrors, just push the mirror itself to where you need it. If it clicks then they're electric, but I'm putting money on it being non electric units...

The switch has 8 wires, the plug has 10 (there is a red and a brown missing from the switch). All the wires in the switch correspond to those in the plug. When I moved them manually I didn't notice them clicking but they were hard to move.

What if you yank off the plastic triangle trim on the inside from the mirrors - that would reveal any power wires. Bennies clicking is also the best clue.

The mirror will have some friction to move it, otherwise it will move when you're driving.

It would be very unusual for a Subaru to have electric mirrors without the switch, especially if the blanking plate was still in the dash board.

If you want electric mirrors you'll need to replace the mirror units, removable from behind the plastic triangle trim piece (push it up from memory). Three screws will have it out/off.

If there was a matching plug for the mirror control pad it should be all good. Subaru are notorious for putting extra wires in for different things - the extra two could be a heating element in the mirrors for a JDM spec l series - not that I've heard of this on an l series before.

You should have a plug in the driver's and passenger's kick panel to hook the mirror's wiring to. If you do add the electric mirrors make sure you get all the wiring from the mirror to the kick panel, it might be wrapped in with electric window wiring, easy to pick it out for your install.

To check you've got this wiring at the kick panel you can hold the pad on with one function and reference each combination of wiring sequence until you get a voltage reference. Just make sure you're working on the side indicated by the pad's switch. From memory the plugs are green, but I am a bit hazy on this as there's a few plugs in that area.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

That sounds like too much hard... if they don't click then I'll call it quits :( I still need to change the mirror glass too cos they magnify way too much and are dangerous for driving
